Rear camber looks off... or is it supposed to be?

When I squat down behind my M5 and look at the rear wheel as compared to the front (on either driver or passenger side of the vehicle) the bottom of the rear wheels seem to not be parallel to the front wheels. The bottom of the tire seems to be further out from the vehicle than the top, maybe by an inch or more as compared to the front wheels. Is this normal? I was considering getting an alignment to have this checked out, but wanted to see if this was typical of M5s. Thanks!

Tom

That is completely normal for E39 BMWs.

BMW builds most of their cars with a high level of negative camber (that is, when the bottom of the wheel is sticking out farther than the top). It improves handling at the expense of tire wear.

As the gentleman above you said, the rear tires tend to wear rather quickly on their inner edges due to the extreme negative camber. What you saved on an alignment will be spent on new tires in no time at all .

The one thing you can do to prolong the life of the tires (other than adjusting the rear camber to a less negative position, which will influence handling) is to have the two rear tires swapped every few thousand miles. This doesn't involve just putting the left wheel on the right side and vice versa, but rather having each rear tire removed from it's rim and then moved to the other side of the car, maintaining the directional rotation of the tire.

That will even out the wear somewhat by way of making what was the inside edge of the tire the outside edge, etc. If you do this every 5,000 miles or so you should maximize tire life.

also check the toe setting on the tires. A combination of negative camber with lots of toe will chew up tires quickly.
