strange oil leak problem, advice?

Hi all and thanks for looking...

For the past Month I've been having an oil leak on the passenger side of the engine, at first I thought it was the valve cover gasket so I changed it like two weeks ago and the oil leak still, finally today I spent the whole day trying to figure out where is the oil coming from.....so I cleaned everything good so I would see from where is the oil coming from....

finally I found it... is where item #8 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=11&fg=50which is the shut off valve connects with item#7 which is the hose that goes to the air pump, now Im wondering ....is there suppose to be oil coming from the shut off valve I thought only air or gases where suppose to travel through there is this normal or do I have a bigger problem in my hands...please advice if you had this problem before

never heard of this before... I too would not expect oil in that line, only secondary air itno the heads.

I had an oil leak when the dealer failed to replace the rubber grommets under each valve cover BOLT. 8 months after they did the gasket they redid it but replaced the grommets.

Ok, so after some more digging through the engine bay I narrowed it down to the vanos, which in fact is leaking through the vanos solenoid.... on top of the shut-off valve...

so I 've been doing some reading on how to fix this leak and it looks like a simple change of O-rings but I dont know how to do it....do I remove the circuit board and look for the rings or do I remove each solenoid? here are some pics of the vanos solenoid part...can somebody explain exactly how to do this?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...74&hg=11&fg=15

I know it looks clean but there was oil in there when I took the cover off....

also, I dont have any vanos codes so I know this part is in working condition it just leaking oil....

Ok, so since nobody seemed to know on how to remove I continue with my project on my oil leak...so I removed the vanos solenoid circuit board with the solenoids its pretty simple just wiggle them a little bit and they will start to come off....but one at a time little by little until the whole board comes out....

Once I had it out my suspicions were correct one of the O-rings wasn't 100% pics below....now to wait for the dealer to get those O-rings, I ordered them today they should be getting them in a couple of days....

I will update when Im finish, I just wanted to share with everybody just in case somebody goes through the same problem

I'd been following but never had the solenoids out- so I had nthing to add.

Glad you just proceeded with removal- and that you've taken the pictures. Appreciated.

Once you get it buttoned up and fixed, I'll link to it in the FAQ.

Excellent info. Reading this made me wonder...if you took this to a franchise dealer would they do the same fix or would they say you need a whole new vanos system?
