Engine noise, goes eek eek eek eek

Hello
New here, and new to the 2002 M5.
I have this noise, I have located to be somewhere left side front of the engine, behind the coolant resevoir. The sound describes as a eek eek eek eek, produced say when something is spinning, maybe the belt or pully of sort? I did a search but found nothing concrete. Should I shoot a short video clip and host it on youtube maybe you guys will get a better understanding? The eek eek eek eek speeds up as rpm increase, say when i drive or tapping the gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I think you already covered it with your pulley / belt theory.

Shooting a video won't help since we won't be able to isolate the source of the sound (other than from our computers speakers).

You best option is to get your head under the hood with someone else periodically giving a little gas and then you listen for where the noise is coming from. You can rule out the belt by shooting a small amount of wd-40 on the individual pulleys 1 at a time...

Yep I agree with Doug. Sounds like a pulley, tensioner or belt going bad.

if it's always there, idler pulley or belt would be my guess. The A/C belt is in that area, so that would be the first place I'd look, maybe pop the belt off and see if the squeek goes away.

Unfortunately, BMW does not sell the idler pulleys separately, you need to buy the whole arm/pulley assembly, around $100 I think. I was able to get a replacement Dayco idler pulley for the A/C, but it wasn't an exact replacement, I had to buy some washers to shim it some, but it was only $20.

for my car it makes that noise kinda like a chirping - a fast one that goes with the engine speed - its something to do w/ my clutch or transmission, as when i depress the clutch the noise stops - just an idea!

My car made the same noise, I swore it was a belt/pulley. Had belts/pulleys checked several times, but not the culprit. A bit of sleuthing turned out to isolate the noise to the water pump. Turned out to be the water pump was going south. Water pump was replaced under CPO and noise was gone. Good Luck - keep us posted.

Excellent point I did not think of the water pump!! See if its weeping at all? Could be the pump bearing going out.

I will look for any weeping.. I really hope it isnt the water pump, that sounds expensive. Everything is so cluttered around that area and I might have to wait for saturday morning to look at it. Bythe time i get home from work its already dark. And like Ray Charles, I can't see sh*t!

NOTE: I am also Virath, made two accounts cuz I totally forgot the email password this one was linked to but I got it back lol.
