Quick question about rear door and rear head protection airbags. Please confirm!!

OK, I've search the matter extensively, but have read contradicting statements.

What I know:
01 and 03 had rear doors standard
02 rear doors were an option

What I'm guessing:
01-03 Rear head protection system (HPS) curtain all were standard?!?

Please confirm:
Even if an 02 did not have rear door airbags, HPS is still present?!?

Thank you from a soon to be M5 owner

I think 01 and 03s have to have them activated at the dealer. I know I have receipts showing that my car had them activated .

All model years had rear doors. Front ones too

Ok, seriously:
02 Rear airbags optional, and rare at that. Need to be activated even when present
<>02 Rear airbags standard, need to be activated

HPS linked to airbags on all model years

Are you sure about that? I'm 99.99% positive that if you have a 2002 w/o rear air bags, there is no rear HPS. I talked with BMWNA years ago about this subject, and that is what I was told. It is easy enough to find out. If you have a 2002 model with no rear door airbags, check the C-pillar for the embossed "HPS" up near the reading lamp.

On 2000 models, supposedly they only have rear door bags. Same check will reveal whether it has HPS.

Correct.

As to 2002 w/o door bags, see above post.

I didn't ask BMWNA about the 2000 models. That info came from the list of changes for 2001 models that BMW put out...there's a link somewhere for it. Curiously, what was the build date for your 2000 model? You must have had a late production model perhaps where they had added HPS in the rear? I've never seen one of those. One of the announced changes for the 2001 M5 was that "Rear side impact airbags now incorporate rear HPS." See: list of changes from 2000 to 2001.
