How do auto manufacturers and private tuning companies decide on BHP Numbers ?

Hi Guys,
I've been seeing so many high performance cars in auto magazines either existing or upcoming, that are rated at 625 BHP. This number now seems to be the standard for most high performance cars.
The reason why i ask this is simple, Dinan designed
the E39 M5 to have their S3 package rated at 625 HP and the new M5 has an available kit from Dinan, again rated at 625 HP. Ironically, the big boy car manufacturers are releasing their high performace sports cars at the same horse power level of 625 HP. Is this mere coincidence or is there a method to the madness ???
TIA.

Not! We've 'only' got 621 HP @7000 rpm in our S3's according to Dinan's website, but we do have 502 lb-ft torque @4500 rpm which is what makes our S3s so much fun to drive. The 5.7 E60 also makes its peak 625 HP at 8000 rpm, a 1000 rpm higher. An interesting exercise would be to compute the HP under the dyno curve for each motor.

OK now that we've beaten that to death let's get down to the serious stuff. When are we going to see your S3 perform in public? Instead of composing these esoteric posts of yours, you should be signing up for and getting ready for Enzom's Monday, March 10 private rental at Atco! How about it big guy? I've heard all your previous excuses so save your breath. Come on out, we'll have a lot of fun! You know we're going to torture you until you do.

I was up at MWW today and got the 3.45 rear reinstalled and ordered a pair of Nitto NT-555R drag radials plus new rims. We're gonna be ready.
