1200 mile oil change question
Hi everyone. OK so I have approx. 550 miles on my car and I plan to put another 500 next week. My dilema is that I will be driving to and from Boston putting on those 500 miles and I may actually go over 1200 miles before I get back home. Is this bad for the 1200 mile oil change if I go over? Does it have to be exactly at 1200 miles or is 1300-1400 OK? It seems like I'll either have too many or too few miles on the car before/after the Boston trip so I'm screwed either way. Any ideas/suggestions?

over 1200 is not going to create a problem. but, the sooner the better, so you can actually drive the beast how you've wanted to all along....
it is the differential oil, not the engine oil, that gets changed, too...

ps: great to see the beast has survived puberty!! now it's time for MANHOOD!!!

yeah, only the diff oil gets changed in the U.S. In europe, if i recall, they change the engine oil. I believe the engine oil should be changed, on the undocumented suspiscion that the 1st 1200 miles will produce more metallic particles than the next 10,000. So I paid my dealer to change the engine oil. Better safe than sorry.

Hotrod, Greg; So if I go over it doesn't really matter? 500 of those miles will be highway miles anyway. Thanks!

Yes, In UK they change the engine oil as part of the 1200 mile service. Not sure why they don't in US as if you are changing the diff oil then seems sensible to also change the engine oil.

My car's got over 3000 miles now but no 1200 miles service yet. Why? Because the hood is buckled (won't open) and I need to get this sorted first. I'm not worried though - will get it done immediately after the bodywork.

Ashok,
You should get it done asap as the reason they have the 1200 service is because they use special running-in oil in the diff. Also will not look good in the service logbook that you missed it. Hope repairs go OK. When is due to be fixed?

Hi John,
Thanks - I know I need to get this done. Put on 900 miles in my first two weeks then took that fateful trip to Switzerland and Germany, returning via Holland, Belgium & France. That put a load of mileage on the car but I can't get any servicing until the body's done.
The claim form's been returned, the bodyshop have looked over the car (and I looked them over!!) and we're just waiting for them to get the parts & paint in stock. Hopefully it'll be in this week and been done in a few days. I'm really looking forward to the courtesy car (Nissan Micra)...

according to BMW NA, the reason why they don't change the oil on the 1200mile service, is that they change the oil once it gets to VPC in the US... for the European cars, the oil when delivered to the customer is the same as the one when it leaves the factory....
personally, I don't see much of a difference there, since the car only goes like 1 mile with the factory oil.. I don't understand why they have to change it at the VPC....

1200 Miles
I suspect they run the engine awihle before installation on the line; even GM does that! So if BMW NA is changing it upon arrival, that would seem to be enoiugh. I don't think you can change oil too often, so I will pony up for it at 1200 miles myself.

GreekM5;
My M5 had 2300 miles before I could get in to the first service. The service manager said it wasn't a problem. Most of the extra miles where highway miles (an 1100 mile round trip to WV). I had some fun once I passed 1200 miles but didn't run it hard very often until after the service. My dealership replaced differential and transmission fluids. The transmission feels so much smoother now. There was no engine oil change. Since I was a little less than a 1/2 quart low at the time, they did give me a quart of 5w30 to use once it gets a full quart low.

Richard in NC,
Thanks for the reply! That makes me feel better. By the way, nice color combo. I hear the car just gets better with miles on it.... waiting in anticipation!
