In the picture above, you see the "circlip" which is the U-shaped silver part. That part keeps the shifter attached to the shift linkage through the hole at the bottom of the shifter. Make sure it is removed by prying it off with a flat-head screwdriver (from under the car), pulling the shift linkage sideways a bit to dislodge it from the hole at the bottom of the shifter, then pull the shifter out (from inside the car). Does that make sense?

If you have done that and the shifter does not pull out from inside the car, make sure you turned the white bushing (from inside the car) with a set of needle-tip pliers.

Again, here is the installation link for reference. http://bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/tips_...er_install.htm

Likewise, I originally bought a modbargains shift boot, but just got the 540i/6 boot + frame. So, if anyone wants the modbargains one, pm me.

Correct. I do like the fact that they are only $35 + shipping from a known vendor...thanks for the link.

i just wanted to make sure that i am ordering the correct parts for the install. i received an email back from crown auto rep with the following item list that differs slightly than the items ordered in the posted invoice pic:

25117546373 Shift Lever - Qty 1
25111469397 Fulcrum Bushing - Qty 1
25117571899 CirClip - Qty 2
25111220439 Yellow Plastic Washers - Qty 4

also, the best place to get the dssr is from uuc directly? any non-zhp illuminated knob options available? lastly, is a new boot cover required or the stock one will work fine with the stock illuminated knob, although the alcantara boot cover combo is very enticing from modbargains.com (anyone have pics of the alcantara installed)? thanks for the help.

You don't really need the 4 yellow washers since the shift lever comes with a light protruding bushing while the stock one does not. But, its only a few cents so no biggie.

I'm can't think of any other illuminated knob options at the moment...

The stock boot will work fine with your stock illuminated knob and new shifter.
