Rear seat locking mechanism rattle

After months of trying to figure out the annoying rattle in my rear deck and several hours worth of removing the rear deck completely and placing sticky foam back there, I have come to the final conclusion that the annoying noise is actually from the rear seat locking mechanism. I am pissed I went through all of this but happy in a sense that I know where it's coming from now.

To put it this way, when my seats are down there is no noise. When my seats are up and in place the rattle is so annoying and it's actually worse at low speeds and whenever there is even the smallest torsion in the car's body.

So what's the fix to this???

This may sound silly, but ...

maybe you should try repainting the inside of the latch, and the "bar" it clasps to. When they are new, they are painted and don't rattle. But, if you put your rear seat down and up a lot, the paint comes off and you have a "pure" metal to metal contact ... squeak, squeak ...

My 318ti has the fold down rear seats, but I seldom fold them down, so they don't rattle, yet ...

If you don't want to try that, you can "try" to wrap a couple layers of Scotch tape around the "receiver." But, you would probably have to replace it often.

Carpet Tape

Put one or more layers of thick double-sided carpet tape where the top of the seat backs contact the deck. This keeps tension on the latches and invisibly solves the problem. This worked like a charm for me.

If you fold down your seats frequently you need to replace the tape periodically, but it is still a cheap fix.

I don't have the folding seats on my M, but have had the same problem with other cars. use duct tape it lasts longer than other tapes.

i am not sure this works, however what came to mind was possibly adjusting the hook to a better location to stop rattle or to spray it with plasti-dip/rubberizer...

Fixed my problem

I took some earlier advice and wrapped cloth carpet tape around the bars that the seats latch on to. I'm sure I'll have to occasionally replace the tape but hey it worked and it cost almost nothing. My car is quiet again inside...wow!
