        2002 audio problem

I've got a brand new 2002 M5 and can't get at the DSP features of the audio system. If DSP is on it only allows me to choose Memo, Demo and On/Off. If it's off only On/Off is selectable.

It's been this way since I bought the car, but then two days ago on my way to work the audio system cut out entirely! No radio, no CD, not even the Nav instructions. The GPS was still working -- just no audio. When I started the car for the trip home the audio was back and the DSP features where all enabled for a couple of minutes and then were gone again! Weird huh?

Any experiences like this out there?

        Thanks,
        Alex

I had a problem with my audio when I installed my TV tuner. No audio from anything, the tv, radio, cd, dvd, or mp3. Turns out that the '02 has a different radio tuner from what I have been told. Because it is a different part for the Beast, perhaps there is a fluke?

I was told that the tuners are different by the guy who installed my TV tuner, don't quote me on it. I never compared any of them.

Similar, but not the same experience. Twice, I've started out in my car and noticed the sound was absolute crap at higher volumes. It was like the bass settings were turned all the way up and everything else sounded muffled. Also, there was no limit to the volume as is normally the case. Tried to go to the DSP and look at the EQ on memo 1 and found it to be off! (I leave it on memo 1, so it should stay this way.) Also, I couldn't turn it on or make any adjustments to the sound other than volume. Solution both times was turning the car off and letting the computers reset, then everything is fine and back to memo 1! Strange and annoying! I was just glad it wasn't something serious because initially I thought the speakers were blown. I hope this goes away b/c it will be a bitch to explain this to my dealer and I'm sure it would never happen while within 10 miles of the service center.

Sorry I don't have a real solution, but I figured I would contribute to the discussion and see if others had heard of similar problems.

I found a possible reason for the DSP problem on '02 models. If you have a destination programmed and restart the car, the DSP doesn't function until you restart the car and do the following:
        1. Say "NO" to "Continue Guiding?"
        2. Turn on the stereo, go into DSP, and turn it on.
        3. You can then go back to the GPS, hit destination and restart it guiding.
It is a real pain but it takes care of it.

I also have had the display just shut off. When I press the select button, it comes back on with the BMW logo and accept screen. The stereo continues playing in this case.
