ping, knock, detonation??

I noticed today when I really step on the gas I hear the car pinging or knocking. It only does it sometimes and it only does it when I am hard on the gas. I run 93 octane in the tank and I have a SES light that comes on and off once and a while. Do you think something might be causing the sounds and triggering the SES light. The light goes away and comes back every other day.

I would suspect a knock sensor. Either the wire has fallen OFF, or it is broken, or the sensor has gone south.

Normally a knock sensor is a crystal, if it breaks... it is broken not intermittent. Do you know the company you buy your gas from... there are alot of stations that cheat. I know all the cheaters in my area from one of my old trucks, needed super or it pinged like crazy on accellation, at least now I know exactly where to go to buy gas for my ///M. It could be a miss fire in one of the cylinders, I haven't had a problem with timing issues on BMWs, but hey it could happen I guess.

I had this and my Camshaft Positioning Sensors (exhaust) were shot. Cured it completely.

With most modern cars, you should not be able to hear any pinging; the knock sensor should take care of it long before it becomes audible. I would suspect either broken knock sensors, in which case you should get a code, or more something else, like CPS suggested above.
Regards,
Jerry

Bingo.

You will never hear detonation. If the KS goes bad the car automatically assumes it is detonating and ******s timing to protect the engine!

No Peake? Yet?
