Could my e39 be chipped?

So today, I had a friendly run with a CTS-V

I was watching the spedo and expected the needle to stop at 155mph... but it kept climbing to 175

I was at 175mph with the tach at 6500k in 6th gear

I know the wheels play a part in a correct spedo.. dunno.. I'm running everything stock or so I thought

car is a 2000 with a 6/2000 build date

any ideas?

The 155 limiter could have been disabled, chipping add HP and so accelartion not necessary top speed.

or just the typical optomistic e39 speedo. Next time, have someone reset the avg speed on the obc, it is more acurate.

this is what I'm thinking but a 20mph inaccuracy? I guess at that speed it's possible

Fuddy,
where in NJ where you able to get it up to 175mph, without being tagged by the state troopers?

Better yet, why are you so irresponsible on a highway that you share with other INNOCENT drivers? Please read the e60 M5 and an airstrip in Florida thread and then SLOW DOWN.

I don't know a lot about speed limiters (just what I have read here for the last 5 years).

I understand there are two ... one top speed limiter, and one RPM limiter. The top speed limiter hits us at 155 MPH actual (plus up to 10 % error, which would be 170 MPH). The RPM limiter has a limit of 7,000 RPM in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. It's limit in 5th is 6,800 RPM, and in 6th is 6,500 RPM. (Per a post a long time ago by Gustav.)

And, I have read that the Dinan reprogram adds 500 RPMs in each gear and unlimited top speed.
