I drove my new (to me) 02 Imola Red M5 home on Saturday, and have been getting to know it via some routine maintainence.
Anyhow, I have studied the threads (via the search option) for replacing the serpentine belts, but I have a problem.
I cannot get the fan to come loose. I have a large 32mm wrench and all the whacking of it in the world will not break it free.
I do not have access the special BMW holding tool.
What would you folks reccomend as an alternative.
Also, photo's of the beast will be posted after this weekend.
go from below, do not remove the fan.
I did my belts with the fan in place, from under the car.

I did mine in 20 minutes when I changed the oil a few weeks ago. So much easier.
You'll need a jack and jackstands, which should be standard for any DIY or owner...
ramps are handy too

Thanks guys!
Yes, I did know that the fan is reverse thread.
That certainly makes it safer when the engine is spinning.
I will put it up on ramps and come from underneath.

Yes, this is the mechanic's school of hard knocks.

Thanks again, Al. Wise
Very wise ... from a 70 year old master mechanic. Always a good idea to ask your questions FIRST. It's often too late to ask after the fact.
