Lap Times - M5, Z8, et al.

I found this post on the Roadfly.com Z8 Messageboard:

Laptimes for different cars
Here are some times for different cars. A quite interesting list to read.
The information was compiled and sent to us by David Mocnay, who got the times from the German car magazine Sport Auto. We send our thanks to David!

The laps where all done by the same driver on a dry track at Nuerburgring Nordschleife.

Car Time Comment
Porsche 996 GT2 7 min 46 sec
Porsche 996 Turbo 7 min 56 sec
Lotec Porsche 993 Turbo 7 min 57 sec 600 HP, racing suspension
Porsche 996 GT3 8 min 9 sec
Ferrari 550 8 min 7 sec
Lamborghini Diablo SV 8 min 9 sec
Ferrari 360 Modena 8 min 9 sec
Chrysler Viper GTS 8 min 10 sec
Porsche 993 Turbo 8 min 12 sec 430 HP version
BMW Z8 8 min 15 sec 400 HP
Porsche 996 C2 8 min 17 sec
Ferrari F355 8 min 18 sec
BMW M Coupe 8 min 22 sec 321 HP
Audi RS4 8 min 25 sec 375 HP
Porsche 993 C2 8 min 28 sec
BMW M5 8 min 28 sec 400 HP
Porsche Boxster S 8 min 32 sec
BMW M3 Coupe 8 min 35 sec 321 HP
Honda NSX 8 min 38 sec
Honds S 2000 8 min 39 sec
Chevrolet Corvette 8 min 40 sec
Audi S4 8 min 42 sec 265 HP
Lotus Exige 8 min 42 sec
Jaguar XKR Coupe 8 min 49 sec
Mercedes CLK 430 8 min 52 sec

Note that the Z8 beat the Porsche 996 C2 and the Ferrari F355, and the M5 beat the M3 coupe and Corvette (not sure of the model). The BMW brothers held up pretty well against the impressive field of race-bred Porsches, Lamborghini, and Ferraris!

I wonder how a Nowack N500 would fare with a modified suspension and over 500hp!

Actually, as we were speculating in another post, with the AC Schnitzer DFC suspension, the M5 would run about 8min. 13 sec (in race track mode) based on the velocity gained through various corners on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in Sport Auto magazine. WIth the N500 package and the DFC, our european board members were speculating that the car would do about 8 min. flat!

Now put THAT into perspective! I guess it's time to start saving up for that DFC suspension!

It's the E36 M3 Evo, the E46 M3 had 8.22 by the same driver.
The lap times are from the outstanding german magazine Sport Auto.

Regarding the 8.13 time with the M5 it was based on a 5km/h faster average speed around the Nordhscleife. With DFC in race setting the M5 was 5-19,6 km/h faster in different corners than stock.

Also best time for stock is 8.20 accomplished by BMW test drivers.

Cheers,
/Johan

Looking at the times above just shows how fast Wolfgang Kaufmann driving the Gemballa GTR6000 porsche 911 in 7 mins 32.5 secs must have been going.

So Johan,

We could be talking even lower times then? Such as ... say 8:10 or less? sounds to me like it would be between 8:05-8:10!

WOW! So I guess that DFC must really transform the car in the race track setting!

Look out Porsche and Ferrari-- the Beast is coming to hunt you down!

Where are we at on that DFC group buy???

As much as I would like to belive a laptime of 8 flat, I dont think that is posible. The car is just to heavy.

My guess is 8,15 is the limit, maybe 8,10 but I dont think so.....
But the DFC suspension is just about the best thing available for the M5.
And no, the Nowack wont stand a chance against the AC Schnitzer M5 unless it has the same setup......

Erik,

Neither the Viper, F550 nor the Diablo ar nay light weight cars and they also have the disadantage of having a suspension that must work decent on normal roads.

Out of the corner speed it is ease to conlude that the M5 will bet at least 5km/h around the lap.

Given that you can drive the stock M5 in 8.20, an added average speed would give a lap time of 8.04. 10km/ added speed would give 7.48

The 8.13 time was calculated from 8.30. With Sport Auto time of 8.28 5 more km/h would give 8.11 and 10km/h more would give 7.56.

Faster speed in corners means faster speed on straigths so a speed of close to 8.10 should be possible, perhaps even more.

Cheers,
/Johan

There is a good web site comparing track times for different cars on several tracks. It is in German but you can get the idea.
