Most of the info asked in this thread can be found in the stickys at the beginnging of http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/

Here are the basic year to year changes;

What changes were made to the E39 M5 during the time that it was produced?
Though there were no major mechanical alterations to the E39 M5 during its entire production run, there were a number of equipment alterations that appeared with the 2001 model-year M5 (from 9/00 production). These include:
-Revised headlight design incorporating illuminated "Angel Eye" rings
-"Jeweled" tallight design
-Park Distance Control sensors in the front bumper (previously in rear only)
-Thicker three-spoke M steering wheel identical to the one fitted to the E46 M3
-Grey instrument faces
-Solar sensor for standard automatic climate control
-Revised navigation/audio unit with larger (6.5-inch) monitor
-Rear head protection airbags added
-Second-generation M Mobility tire repair system in place of earlier version
-Available M Audio System with special tweeters, Kevlar/carbon coaxial speakers and two subwoofers behind the rear console
-Alcantara headliner included with Extended Leather interior (previously only included with Complete Leather)

For the subsequent two model years, changes were limited to the addition of new exterior colors (from 9/01 production) and the upgrade to a DVD-based navigation system (from 9/02 production).

I bought my 00 in March of last year. I bought from CitiBank as a repo. I have put oh about easy 10 grand into the car since then. And I still nead a few things to bring her back to 100%. The original owner ordered her with 100% options. She is a real beauty. Second owner and the one she was taken from was a sleezeball. She had early 540 america headlights without HIDs. Nav system was toast, as was the stereo system. And it had the wrong weight oil in it. I have had to change the oil five times in 10k miles and I finally got the piston tensioner on the timing change to stop losing it's oil overnight, so no more timing chain slap on startup in the morning. Waterpump had a whistle, so I replaced that. Oh and I had the whole cut through the back seat center console repaired. Oh and she had the original tires on her and they were totally gone. I got BF Goodrich KDW2 for her and couldn't have made a better choice. Just put new front pads on her, luckily I could save the rotors. Okay it took a week to get the brakes to bed, but the stopping power was there, if you can deal with the noise. I had a lot of unexpected repairs that I didn't know about at the time of purchase. Question is even now knowing everything that I had to put into her to would I have bought this car.... Answer Yes! Cadillac has a commercial that runs in this area that askes: When you turn on your car; Does it return the favor? Most defiantly
