Just Upgraded To The New NAV Software...

Hi Folks,

I was a little apprehensive about burning a copy of the CD -- after all, CD Burners are decent, but you can run into problems with Burner/CD-ROM Compatibility among various drives.

At any rate, a very nice gentleman named Chad has posted the newest 2002 software from BMW. NO, I don't know whether that is legal or not (Probably not!), but I downloaded it and installed it anyway without a hitch!

http://www.bimmer.org/x5/messages/messages/72041.html

This software can be installed on the MK III Navigation System ONLY. That means 2001+ 5 series, 2001+ X5 (I believe wide screen only), and I would assume 2001+ 7 series, 3 series 2001+.

Now I am curious if the pre-2000 5 series (and other cars) just need a newer CD ROM drive to upgrade to the MK III system. This would be an interesting research topic for someone who has the time.

Folks, BE VERY CAREFUL. If the upgrade does not work right, you are stuck with a dealer visit. Hopefully you have a very understanding service advisor I was very nervous doing the upgrade, but I know the master technician at a BMW dealership very well, so I knew I wouldn't have any problems getting it fixed if something went wrong.

Chad has listed instructions and all files necessary, and the download site is very fast too! If you are a computer guru, go ahead and give this a shot.

Comments:

I had a very late model 2001 X5 (built 09/01 -- wanted to get one because I was afraid of price increases) -- so I used the older software for a month just before upgrading to this one.

I really like the new interface -- much nicer on the eyes. The screen is not as bright as it used to be during the night -- it used to light up the whole inside of the cabin New fonts are VERY nice -- much better than the older DOS-like fonts used on the system. Split screen is, of course, very nice.

My only gripe is that, as others have mentioned, the OBC cannot currently be displayed with the Radio/Tape/CD selection. The CD/Tape/Radio display looks very lonely without the OBC selection -- but I am sure BMW will work on this -- this is only "version 1.00" of this new software, so many fixes/features will be implemented as time goes by.

I really like what I have. As I mentioned, if you are a computer guru and know what you are doing with burning CD's -- go for it! The software is legit and works great!

Feel free to ask any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

-Chris

Any idea if this version will support the 8000 phone? Voice reco? TV tuner? all on a 2001...

Yep, should all work fine. A person on the bimmer.org board has a TV Tuner installed and it shows up as an option -- I have the overpriced 8000 phone and it works fine as well.

I was told they had to take the files down from their server, hopefully they will be back up again.

I was able to get my hands on this new NAV OS version 18 upgrade and installed it with a bit of trepidation onto my M5. Fortunately for me, it worked just fine. I now have the new OS on my beast! I love the new interface.

Hopefully everyone else will be able to get this upgrade for no charge.

Yeah, after the site was posted, a LOT of people started downloading the software upgrade and that overloaded both their servers. That's why they took them down. I've got to figure out where I can put 70 mb worth of files so people here can download the upgrade. Any suggestions, you guys?

Exclamation That was quick!

BMW probably found out what they were doing & put a stop to it.

The execs at NA did mention that they monitor the bimmer.org board regularly.

If anyone else has the instructions, please post them.

Thanks.

bluemax: Like I said, I'd need a server with at least 70 mb of space to upload the files to. These are the instructions I was given.

BMW Navigation Version 18
These files will allow you to create the necessary CDs to update your navigation system to version 18. Please note that this should ONLY be used by BMW owner's located in the United States and Canada since BMW sells this software in other countries and you must purchased the software so that you do not violate any copyrights. That said, you will need to download both "Key-CD.zip" and "Software-CD.zip" or just "Key-CD.zip" if you already have the version 18 Software CD.

Instructions.jpg (563956 bytes)
Key-CD.zip (650239 bytes)
SetupCloneCD.exe (2205487 bytes)
Software-CD.zip (63148703 bytes)
Use the CloneCD software to create the CD's. Remember you are using this AT YOUR OWN RISK, if for some reason the software doesn't load correctly you are going to have to come up with a very creative answer for you dealer.

Enjoy!!

Here's the picture:

If anyone knows of a place I could put the files, I'd be happy to upload it to. I can't post the link to the website that I got the software from. I promised the guy that I wouldn't post it.

I wonder if anyone has shared it out on a p2p network yet...

Anyways, I've got a website account that hosts 150megs... if you can get the files to me, I'll put it on.... not sure how that site would hold up though, if hundreds of people try to download it at the same time...
