Should I get a used 2000 M5 w/7000 miles?

Hey! I'm new to this forum and I've been waiting to get an M5. The dealership called me and notified me that a used 2000 M5 was available and that it had 7000 miles on it. They're asking ~$65K. Any thoughts on used BMW's or the price? What's different between the 2000 M5's and the 2002 M5's? I ask because Allison BMW in Sunnyvale is asking $7500 over MSRP for a 2002 M5. Yikes!! Should I get the used 2000 M5 or wait until I can find a better deal on the 2002 M5's?

Thanks!

Useed vs New

m5jay

I purchased my 2001 M5 September 7th for MSRP, as have most people in the last few months, (especailly since 9-11).

I'm not aware of many differences between the 2000 and 01/02 cars, with the exception of a better and larger Nav display.

If the 2000 is the color you want and has the options you want, $65K is fair (for a dealer). I've seen a few used 2001's here in L.A. lately for $68-69K.

For $65K, I'd expect to get a full, 100 mile warranty from the dealer, but all in all, it's probably a fair price.

Check out the other threads on this board, (there's a new one about pricing), as this board and it's members are a huge help. You'll find all the knowledge and support you could possibly want in regards to the M5.

Good luck and hope you become the happy owner of an M5. It's a fantastic automobile !

cool!

Thanks Steve!

I'm going to the dealership tomorrow to check out the car so I guess I'll bring my checkbook just in case.

The 2001/2 steering wheel is a bit smaller I think and the style is different. I think the buttons on the wheel may be more ergonomic (I sat and manipulated them once, comparing them to my 2000 M5 - I've no problem with mine though).

The later 2000 builds didn't have the oil consumption problem either. I'm not sure of the build month cutoff date concerning that or if it was sporadic and I was lucky.

Also, I kept on hearing reports of loud VANOS noises with the 2000 models and I can't remember the last time somone complained about it so I would assume that has been corrected. My late 2000 build (recieved it in July) didn't have a pronounced VANOS noise and oil consumption was, and is, very minimal.

Good luck! It's a fantastic automobile.

I bought my car 6 months ago. It had 5,000 miles on it, practically new. It was flawless. So I saved luxury tax, didn't have to wait, and it's already broken in. The car never stops surprising you. Everyday you pull in the garage grinning like a fool. I paid 68k which after looking around seemed to be a good deal. Good luck.

Look in the For Sale section as someone has a 2001 for about the same price.

the only caviets I can think of are the usual wear/tear items- especially the clutch- just be sure the car is ok. make sure to take it for a test drive and make sure to walk around the car and look under the bumpers and doors and look for any over spreay on body pannels. also ask the dealer if the car had been in any accidents. if they say no- then ask them to put that in writing.

I have an 01, but also had an 00. I find the 01 to have numerous improvements, albeit with most of them being relatvely minor. There are some additional improvements in the 02, but these are fewer, I believe.

I would get a new one unless the dealer comes down from the $65k price and price is important to you.

Basil brought up an important point - excessive oil consumption on pre 3/200 engine builds. These early engines required 10W60 motor oil, while post 3/2000 engines had modified piston rings, supposedly reducing oil consumption. The later engines require 5W30 (or 5W40) oil. This refers to engine build dates, NOT car production dates.

The best way to tell which engine is present is to check the oil recommendation sticker UNDER the hood. The dealer will not likely be able to tell you.
