Coolant temperature: Thermostat open?

Noticed that the coolant temperature gauge is sitting at the first 1/4 mark, while in the summer it was just to the left of the 1/2 mark. Oil temperature is per normal, just under the 100 degree C mark (212 F) just a bit left of the middle).

The cabin warms up quickly, but I would be happier if the coolant gauge was closer to the 1/2 mark. The digital readout gives me a coolant temperature of 75-77 degrees C (170 Fahrenheit), with an ambient temperature of -5 degrees C (23 F) and cruising on the motorway.

As per some other threads the culprit could be the thermostat that is stuck open, but would appreciate if anyone else could give me some references for what their temperature is (the readout).

Thanks!

With my experience working on other automobiles. The thermostat would be the culprit. However it hasn't happened to me in the M5 as yet....

i just got my car back rassi from the stealer after a termostat replacement last monday and mine is now a little under the middle. its minus 4°c for now , i think its just the weather thats doing it.
iff you stand still does the temperature rise up to the middle??..iff so i'd guess its the weather ,they say its going to be better by sunday, maybe wait a other few days,

iff you want a estimated price for a replacement by the stealer, mine was 385 euro+btw.they replaced termostat housing 118euro+btw,termostat 88euro+btw,coolant 12euro+btw and termostat sensor15 euro+btw and the rest is workfee/1,5 hours.

mine was stuck on 1/4 open so the car always overheated. maybe yours is 3/4 stuck open . could be a possibility like you say.

strange whe both have this now it bigins to get a bit colder.anyway hope you find the problem

It should be at the half way point. Even though the air temp is cold, the fire inside the engine is still the same temp. It may take a little longer to warm up, but the whole point of the thermostat is to get your temp up to that point.

If it gets to the 1/4 mark quickly, then your thermostat is likely fine. If it takes a long time to get there, then it is probably stuck open.

The symptoms of an open thermostat are usually long time to warm up, but typically not any change in overall engine operating temperature.

I suspect you might have a faulty sending unit...

My temp needle often sits below half way on cool days, or easy highway runs. Best way to check temps is to check the OBC. From memory, test #7 is water, #16 is oil. I typically see somewhere around 80 C.
Regards,
Jerry

usually if the thermostat is bad you will get a code. it still could be bad though and it is an easy change so give it a try,

Just got an M5...so new to this. 55 miles

Engine runs a little cold-- little before halfway on thermostat (it's about 50 F outside) and then the heater is not fully heating, even at 90 F i'm not getting a blast furnace.

What I really notice is that at the air ducts in the middle are sending cool air out, the air ducts to the feet are sending war air and the air ducts to the window are sending warm air.

What could cuase this ? let me know plz if you got any ideas

have you turned the temp control wheel to the red marks... ? it's in the center of the middle air ducts...
