Please assist with interpreting these codes...

Hi, my car has an SES light on and I pulled up these 6 codes using an Actron OBD 2 scanner:

1) 0021- "A" Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2)

2) 1354- Misfire during Start Cylinder 7

3) 0305- Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

4) 0300- Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

5) 0303- Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

6) 0306- Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

Now I just need to figure out what's wrong with my beast and what parts I need to get. Any help is greatly appreciated...thanks guys!

You need a bank 2 CPS... not sure which one of the 4 that is with those codes, but all the other codes are likely due to the loss of sync when the CPS throws errors.\\

Would it help if I mentioned the car is smoking like crazy and the smoke smells like a sewage plant? Would both the intake and the exhaust CPS cause this symptom?

I was thinking the problem sounds like either cps, spark plugs, or coils... from what I've read here but I don't want to do the fix-by-guessing method. I would like to replace only that which needs replacing. I appreciate everyone's input

Sounds like a defective CPS to me too. My input would be to replace both exhaust CPS.

One exhaust went bad on me last year (removed and replaced), the other one just went bad last month (I now have 70,000 miles) so I am having this one replaced this weekend by my mechanic.

My advice is to replace both at the same time, done deal, you wont have to worry about when (not if) the other one goes bad. It is only a matter of time and they will go bad.

Important note based on my experience:
1) When one of the exhaust CPS went bad on me (item number 9, see attached) - my enqine power went down by 50hp ( I took it to the dyno to confirm my butt o meter), plus the SES light came on. Pulled code. Removed and replaced 1 CPS. Fixed!

2) A year later, 3 weeks ago, SES light is back on, and noticeable deep, low, rumble exhaust. Pulled Code. The other CPS went bad (item no.8 on the attachment). CPS will be replaced this Sunday.

See attached file. CPS is item 8 and 9. Item 9 was replaced last year. Item 8 will be replaced this Sunday. ($200.00 to have one CPS removed and replaced for parts and labor by our friend BMW mechanic.). Stealer charged me $430.00 for one CPS last year.

Very good info, thanks. Even though replacing both sensors would be ideal, my wife is jobless right now so we are on a tight budget until she starts working again, so I would prefer to identify the exact culprit for now and spend the minimum I have to on parts.

I thought the first code, 0021, "A" Bank 2, designated a specific sensor. For example if it was "B" Bank 2 then it would be the other one, right? or does it not work like that. Because when I saw that code come up I was thinking cool, that will tell us exactly which sensor is going off...

P.S. Are you guys also noticing the constant changes with the site? One day on the left side it says our car's desc. and the next just "view gallery" and for a day or two we had an additional feature, a post counter, but now it's gone? It's not just me right and what is the reason... is Gustav getting bored again haha???

If you are talking about exhaust smoke vs engine smoke, perhaps dead catalytic converter(s)?

I wish that was it but I have a feeling it's not that. I would love an excuse to get some performance cats but since majority opinion said cps' I went ahead and ordered 2 exhaust cps', one to replace each exhaust one since no one told me how to determine which of the Bank 2 exhaust sensors is bad and they should be arriving this Friday and I will be attempting the install myself on Saturday, though I am not inclined toward mechanics Wish me luck!

I fully expect the problem to be resolved but in case it's not I will be here with more questions and probably on my way to getting new spark plugs

Crank sensors can cause some funky symptoms. The stinky exhaust is probably a result of misfires that could very well be caused by the bad crank sensor.

I agree with the suggestion to replace all of them. You didn't mention what kind you bought, but I will tell you from experience to never, ever, ever install aftermarket sensors. If it doesn't say BMW on the box, return them. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard "I had crank sensor faults, so I replaced the sensor, and now the car (insert symptom here)." I've even seen DMEs replaced because of it. Aftermarket sensors just don't work.

And a quick side note...don't forget to replace the o-rings.

Yes, everything you mentioned I already figured out from either here or the knowledgeable parts guy who placed my order (o-rings) but I can tell you really know your stuff and I appreciate everything you have advised me on I did go to autozone just for the heck of it and see if they had the part...I thought they were gonna say it's a dealer-only part like they do for so many things but surprisingly they said they had 2 aftermarket companies that made the sensors I needed, one was Duracraft and the other was Welco? I think and they were both special order items and both brands were $130 a piece! Well, not only are they not BMW brand or Bosch who I semi-trust, but they were about $45 more than they cost at Tischer BMW, http://www.tischerbmw.net/ , who I ended up ordering from. And I had no idea about o-rings but the parts dept. advisor told me it was a very good idea and I had no problem with that so I got 2 of those as well as the 2 sensors.

I've got my fingers-crossed this is the solution...by the time Saturday comes along it will have been exactly 2 weeks that my car has not been driven. This might not be strange to some of your garage queens out there but to me it's a first since I bought it, I think 2 days of none-use was the previous record, so you can imagine how much 2 weeks is killing me!

Not a productive day...

Well, I tackled my both my exhaust cps sensors today and it took me 4 hours for the driver's side and 1 hour for the passenger side, I definitely enjoyed the passenger's side more. Unfortunately the problem I was having with my misfiring and machine-gun exhaust is not gone as I had hoped, but seems like I did gain some power though still misfiring and the weird thing is that my codes changed after replacing the sensors, here are the new codes post replacement:

P0316 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP FIRST 1000 REVOLUTIONS
P1348 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP CYL 4
P1354 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP CYL 7

Codes after clearing above codes and driving hard for 5 minutes:

P0316 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP FIRST 1000 REVOLUTIONS
P1348 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP CYL 4
P1354 - MISFIRE ON STARTUP CYL 7
P1355 - MISFIRE CYL 7 WITH FUEL CUT-OFF
P0021- "A" CAMSHAFT POSITION TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE (BANK 2)

Notes: Exhaust also has a lot of moisture at the tips and is smoking and much more odor then normal

Any ideas as to why I'm still misfiring and what I need to replace next? Looks like I'm going to be playing the "guess the broken part game"
