HVAC Fan Blower Speed issue

I have a 2001 E39 M5. The automatic HVAC system seems to be acting a little strange...but since I'm new to BMW in general, I don't know what to expect. Basically, I usually have the system on Auto - both the green LED on the [AUTO] button is on as well as AUTO is displayed on the HVAC screen. Some of the time the fan speed indicator doesn't seem to match the actual speed of the blower. Also, when I manually adjust the fan speed, nothing seems to adjust right. I find myself looking to turn the fan down to low, one up from OFF. Sometimes when I do that, I get full speed...then again, sometimes when I have it 3 or 4 from low speed, I get very little flow, etc. Am I doing something wrong or is this an issue that I can fix.

Thanks for your help.

Joshua

Probably part number 3 ....very common. Pelican parts has them. Easy to replace, try a search for final stage resistor

I certainly would start with replacing the final stage resistor. It's not cheap, but something you can do yourself (although you almost have to be a contortionist with small but strong hands to get it in). If you take it to a dealer, you will pay for the diagnosis and labor, which could easily cost as much as the part itself. Note that the part nos. have been superseded 2x, so we're on the third generation of this part. It's no accident. This part has been known to fail easily, often causing the erratic symptoms you describe. Sometimes the blower stops working completely when these fail. I'm on my 3rd one now. The first was replaced under warranty some years ago. The current one (third if you count the original as no. 1) looks quite a bit different from the earlier ones, with much thinner "teeth." If yours never has been changed before, odds are that's the problem. Good luck.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

I was sitting at my SAs desk the other day (I'd stopped by to give him a ride in the 996TT) and another SA got a call from a woman- her "AC blowers was speeding up and slowing down". He said "yes mame, it is not too common (BMW CYA) but we've seen this- the part is around 120 and it is two hours to replace, so around $350".

I looked at him and said "So what, $90 at parts and take me 30 minutes to pop it in?" He nodded and smiled. I said "fish in a barrel, eh?"

I'll probably just head down to Century and pick one up today. I know its 20 bucks more but I'd rather go ahead and get it in while I have the time. Maybe I should join BMWCCA to save a few bones.

Thanks!

Do you guys want to meet up some time?
