This is not going especially well. I burnt v21, v22, and a 2007-1 CD. It chucked them out pretty quickly. I then tried at 1x speed, and the v21 worked. The v22 gets further than before then gives up, and the 2007-1 gets spat out. I'm using Creation CD-Rs, which I have been using for audio and data for several years, and have no reason to doubt.

I suspect that rather than bad media, it is more likely that my Mk2 unit is defective or dirty, it is eight years old after all, and CD-ROM drives in PCs of that age are often dodgy. Has anyone tried cleaning the lens and mechanism on a nav unit?

I've had no luck burning a map CD, so I can't help you (and I have a mk4).

If the MK2 took the V21 then I don't think it is the drive. Try a different brand of CD and burn V22 again.

Or cough up the 700 bones and get a MK4 - it is Christmas after all

I'm replying to my own post with good reason. I've been far too busy to spend time on this until today.

I was so fed up with my nav being slow and crap, that I felt I had nothing to lose. I removed the top and bottom plates which only need to be pried off with a flat screwdriver. I sprayed a generous amount of electrical contact cleaner on all the circuit boards I could get to, that's the big one underneath, and three or four on top, plus the connectors on the rear. After drying, I put the unit back in. Very simple indeed.

I don't know if it's a fluke or not, but the unit no longer slows down the rest of the ICE, and when route-planning, it works as quickly as the day it was made! Thought I'd post here for others who may have a poorly-performing Mk2 and can't justify the outlay on a Mk4. I couldn't be happier - it's almost freakish to watch it working normally!
