The end of E-Code

i know the "E" in the current BMW models stands for Entwicklung, which means evolution or development in German. what i don't know is what the F-Code stands for that the new chassis models coming in the near future. Also why did the numbers jump so high in E-Code?

for example 3 series went from E21-E30-E36-E46 and now E90 what happened to E56-E66-E76-E86-E96 or any numbers between that could represent the 3 series.

Also, does any one know what the logic was for assigning e46 to the 3 series and e39 to the 5 series etc... do the numbers represent a significant to the chassis models??

Each project was assigned an Exx code at its origination, in sequential order. The gap in E codes results from projects that did not make it to production. Think of it this way, there were six projects started in between development of the E39 5-series and the E46 3-series that did not make it to production.

^wow, I guess a lot projects didnt make it to the production since the numbers jumped so HI in the past few years, unless the bmw motorcycles also share the E-Codes as well.

Dont forget that it was the transition with that American designer that designed the look for the new 2004 models. They couldve scrapped some designs as well.

They also used more codes because the coupe, sedan and converts now all get different letters (Z4 Coupe is E86 vs E85 for roadster), and the E90 is only for the sedal.

Maybe they decided to cut the Es at double digits. The next letter would make a good starting point.
