Nice sunset yesterday (pics)

We are building a house and I was up checking on the construction yesterday as the sun was setting. Another nice one in OK!

I had the camera with me to snap some shots of the house and did my best to capture the moment but I really don't know how to take sunset pics the way I want with this Canon elph. Got some serious contrast in the shots though. Anyway I tried a couple with flash and without and here are a few:

And some geese migrating while I was trying to figure out how to best take these pics (I love the Canadian geese migration in the fall):

Finally a pic of my garage/shop under construction. It's a 24x48 building with 5" of reinforced concrete so I can put in a lift. That is, when I can save up for one after blowing all of my $$ on this house.

Nice pictures! I love taking pictures of sunsets. The changing of the colors is interesting. When taking pictures, the more you zoom in, the more color you get. Although you also need to zoom out to see the variation of color across the sky. I let a camera choose its own exposure but I go to a higher ISO or force a decent shutter speed as it gets darker. Here is a sunset at the beach (near Morehead City, NC) where the sun sets over the ocean. I found a spot where a pier adds interest.

PS: These pics are among the 35 I took in just a 20 minute period.

That's what I'm talking about, I love those pictures (I love Carolina Beach too, best family vacation ever).

I tried forcing the ISO setting to "HI" instead of auto but all the pics I took in that mode came out grainy. It's a few-year-old SD-600 Canon though so probably not fit for proper sunset pics. I could definitely not be using it to it's full potential as well. I mostly use it full auto point and shoot mode since it does fine for that. Nice pics!

The higher the ISO, the more noise you'll get.

well that explains it! I thought the higher ISO meant it worked better in low-light situation. But I didn't have much time to experiment as the sun was going down fast. Next time...

It does! You jack up the ISO with low light, but you'll get more noise. You should always try to use the lowest ISO setting possible if you want to keep noise at at minimum.
