strange whining noise in the cabin

when i drive my car there is a sound inside the cabin which is somewhere between a supercharger whine and the sound that ur bike would make when you were 10 and would put ur shoe on the back tire to slow down ur ghetto bmx with no rear brakes. anyone know what im talking about??? i dont hear it when im idleing or going less than 5mph. its very annoying and i hope it isnt my fuel pump. anyone care to chime in?

It sounds like its your transmission. A friend of mine had the same problem that would start at about 3,000 rpm when the car is under load. He had to change the tranny fluid and the sound went away. I've also hear of the same sound ,but the whole tranny had to be replaced. I hope you problem is not the latter..

I had a similar problem in my previous E39 M5. It was tough to diagnosis, however after 2 stops at the dealer it turned out to be the center diff. bearing.

I spoke with Rob at UUC recently and he stated that customers that have purchased the polyurethane [transmission] mounts with the metal mounting cups can be the source of "some unwanted interior harmonics", due to vibration transferred through the mounts. Not sure if this is something that you have done on your M5, FastPOLAK, but if anyone else is seeing this issue after performing this upgrade, at least be forewarned. Also, know that if you do have any concerns about performing this upgrade, Rob is pretty stand-up and will be forthright with you if you have any concerns about doing it. I am probably going to do this on my 540i, but without the metal cups to go along with it, but if I did get the mounts with the cups, having a solid transmission is a good tradeoff to having "some minor interior noise"... Either way, UUC makes some pretty killer products. Rumor has it that there is a big brake kit in the werks for the M5 and 540i from UUC. I would imagine another joint venture between Wilwood and UUC. A sweet big brake kit at a fraction of the cost that a nice shiny set of Brembos and StopTechs (to name a few) can be had for. Wonder if they will let us do a group buy?

Well hopefully your luck is going to improve. I wouldn't go far as to say that this is an omen, but if you want to sell your M5...
