2001 M5 need clutch

I've been slipping in 3rd gear under acceleration. My mechanic with the inspection II indicated the clutch is on it's way out. I was quoted $1400 for part and labor, (also, indicated it will be an extra $1,000 if it needs a flywheel), mechanic indicated 95% of the time not needed.

I found a LUK clutch on e-bay which will save me $350. Here is the part number:
BOSS kit #KBW91411
LUK kit #03-042
BMW kit #21212282388

Has anyone used this part?

Thanks
Ken

Ken, my M5 is in an independent shop getting its' clutch done right now. Here is a list of parts I am using.

LuK Parts same as OE (available at Autozone with warranty)
Clutch Kit 03-042 $312.99 (Clutch kit includes pilot bearing and release bearing)

BMW Parts:
6 Bolts for clutch 07-11-9-901-023 $5.16
Retainer Spring 21-51-1-223-234 $5.67
Release Lever* 21-51-1-223-302 $23.53
2 Transmission Mounts** 22-31-6-771-221 $28.70
2 L Trans. Oil*** 83-22-0-406-941 $49.32

If you do a search on "clutch", there have been quite a people who went with the LUK kit, (which is the same as OE) because they were content with the OE clutch. There have been tons of others who went with heavy duty/performance clutch.

Here is a great write up by OldRanger, I pulled my parts list from there to give to my independent as a resource.

Replacing the E39 M5 Clutch and Flywheel with Original Equipment

I also requested they do:

- While the tranny is out for the clutch change, inspect the rear main seal and check the driveshaft rubber guibo for cracks
- The sleeve-like bearing retainer covering the transmission input shaft should be inspected for wear. The clutch throwout bearing rides on this
sleeve and some see excessive wear and grooving that can affect smoothness and function of the new clutch.
- Inspect and/or replace the bushings on the fork-shaped shifter carrier.

Yes, I purchased the Luk Kit off E-bay. I believe it was $240 shipped. My Indy installed back in May 07. My flywheel was OK. Works great. No issues. BTW, check your Guibo joint (driveshaft flex disc). Now is time to replace (while exhaust removed) if worn/cracked. Good Luck.

Folks have had very bad results using kits from a couple prominent lowball ebay clutch retailers. I surely would not go that route because labor and durability is too important to get "cheap". Many buyers have gotten 100% defective units that required removal. For some reason the SAC units were haywire, almost like they had mismatched disc and pressure plates or they got a batch of blems.

If you want to stick with weak OEM design, Auto Zone's lifetime LUK kit is the best option for OEM quality wrt price, trustability & warranty. For about $25 more than ebay (after shipping), Auto Zone gives you an actual retail reciept, lifetime warranty from a large retail chain and you also get the opportunity to inspect the merchandise before accepting it.

When you talk ebay, you'd better get the EXACT name of the seller. There are many good and bad one's.

+1....ditto...etc...that was the route I went, and after 15K I have no regrets. Super smooth. Plus, I have the comfort of the warranty. My car had about 37K on it when I replaced the clutch, all I did was clean the flywheel up, and did not replace it. It was very, very blued and schorched looking, from trying to "break in" the direct fit clutch (that turned out having the hub mounted backwards). see attached

I got my LUK OEM off ebay as well, installed it a week ago only to find that the Pressure Plate is not right (Extremely easy Pedal and slipping quite a bit).

Looking at the removed original as compared to the ebay jobbie, anyone one would say they are identical. I will be redoing this job this weekend. I will let you know if I find any other marking different with further inspection. Good Luck.. //db

db,

A datapoint indicating which ebay seller you bought the bum clutch off would probably be greatly appreciated. Sounds like there's some folks here who recently bought so-called bargain ebay clutches that they did not install yet.
