Shop told me VANOS is bad....help

I have a 2002 M5, 70k miles. SES light came on yesturday and car idled very rough but smoothes out as soon as power is applied. I drove it several miles over the coarse of the day and it never somoothed out at idle, only while driving at speed. Took it to shop in SD area and guy tells me the timing on the passenger side is not coming back to 30 degreeds but stays at 60. He says that the vanos system codes and that they reset it but it comes back ov after 5 minute drive. Claims parts and labor to fix vanos is $2500. Sound right?

Is this a BMW dealer or a shop? You need to have them determine if it is in fact the entire VANOS unit that needs to be replaced or if only the vanos solinoid needs to be replaced. The solonoid is only $400 versus the entire vanos at $2000.

I think only the stealership can correctly make this diagnosis due to the equipment they use. (GT-1)

VANOS is covered by the California Extended emissions warranty- 7 years 70k

Look into it.

Solenoid is often the problem- 400 versus 2500!

Got the car back last night. VANOS cost me $2010 + $400 labor to install. Dealer kept old unit said there was a core charge and that it had to go back. Car runs great, just cost a ton!

Hey Will-

If you had it done at a BMW dealer, you are in luck (I think)

Like I posted in the link, BMW replaced the VANOS in a 2000 even though it was NOT listed in the printed warranty. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/sho...2&postcount=30

It is NOT a listed component in the printed book for 2000 M5s.

I do not know about 2001- it will be as easy as someone with a 2001 reading the warranty booklet and scanning in a few pages.

No excuse

I have replaced both vanos and the cost certainly is in the $4500 to $5000 range depending on where it is done. The true cost of one bank with a core return is $1950, no labor just the part.

No excuse for this many failed vanos units. BMW should have replaced them all for free.
