Temp sensor question

Hi guys i have a question which temp sensor does the ECU use on my E39 1999 M5,i did a fault code check today and the scanner flagged up a faulty Temperature sensor so i was presuming its the one in the middle of the water pump not the one on the water hose near the radiator (i'm presuming this ones for the cooling fan side of things?)Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was the actual code? There is a water temp sensor, an oil temp sensor, and an outside air temp sensor...
