        Side Mirror Questions

I have 2 simple questions about side mirrors:

        1) Is it possible to replace just the lenses? One of mine has a few burn marks (at least they look like burn marks) and I'd like to replace jus the lens, as opposed to the entire thing. Also, could I install wide-angle lenses to minimize blind spots?

        2) I noticed that my passenger side mirror (just the lens) tilts all the way down when I engage reverse. Is this normal? If so, why just that one? It goes back to regular position as soon as I put the car in any other gear (or neutral).

        Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can replace just the lens and even get the Euro wide angle lens but it'll be more expensive and take more time to get here as they are imported from germany.

And the passenger side mirrror tilts downward when on reverse, this is a feature... You can prevent it from doing this by moving the adjustment switch to the driver side or passenger side, sorry can't remember...

        1. Yes - the mirror just pops out. There are directions available on the board somewhere - search should find it. I think there is a wide-angle available for use in Eu markets...
        2. If the mirror switch is set to the drivers mirror then the passenger mirror tilts down to help you parallel park. If you set the switch to the passenger mirror then it won't tilt down...

Have any of our european members looked into maybe running a side business of selling some used Euro parts in America? I bet that wide-angle (I think it's called aspheric, could be wrong though) glass is pretty cheap off of a wrecked M5.

I put a LH convex mirror purchased from Australia on my S2000 and found it very useful.

I just got back from the shop and the guy couldnt find the lens on the inventory. I mean, he found it....but for like 300 bucks, while the entire assembly was around 400. This can't be right, can it? I mean it's not even the wide angle one, just the regular one. Any one have any ideas of where I can look?

        Thanks!

        yeah, it's absurd.
you might want to look into this:
        http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MIRRO...spagenameZWDVW
not sure what "fit over" means, but at that price it's almost disposable.

        Part # + Prices

        You didn't specify, but I assume it is the drivers side mirror. Part number 51 16 2 498 931. $225 at bmwautopartsdealer.com.

        The aspheric one you are looking for is 51 16 2 694 895. $319...

Those are generally the best prices around, so it looks like we should try to avoid needing new glass!

Personally I could do with a $2 solution to blind spots... so I got the little round mirrors at Walmart and they look good and work great
