        Oil Temp Concerns

        Hey Guys,
Driving around town yesterday running errands, saw the oil temp swing past the halfway point (210 F) for the first time. It has been unusually hot and humid here...car indicated 99F, but probably more like mid 80's, the car was heat soaked getting turned off and on a couple times in a short period, but it still made me take notice considering how gently I was driving.

I know I was no where near danger, and it did return to normal after a few moments, just got me thinking about what things would look like if I was driving hard. In my mind, any stock M car should be able to knock out laps at Willow Springs in the middle of summer with the AC on, with no issues. Is this wishful thinking? At what point should I be concerned, and for those who have tracked their cars on a hot day, what kind of temps did you see?

        Thanks,

you will find more data points with a search, but yes, my oil temp is a bit past 210F much of the time when the weather is nice or warm.

Track with the ac on, you'll be on the side of the track after 2-3 laps. I rode with someone who kept his ac on at a track day once in the summer because it was hot, after a couple laps (if that) "bong" "engine temperature" coolant in the red, oil at 300.

On a hot track day, without the ac, you will eventually have to back off or overheat. a few good laps, oil temp starts creeping up, coolant temp to follow. Only solution out there is the dinan oil cooler, but for the money (around $4k installed), i'll just short shift, back off, and let it cool down as needed.

        Data point:

Last year, I was driving in Nevada ... about 1:00 to 1:30 PM. Traveling over 100 MPH, long steady uphill stretch, A/C on, and the outside temp was 117 degrees. Really!

Oil temp never got over 210 ... I was impressed.

I find it usually goes higher when puttering around in traffic ... when out on the road, it rarely gets over 190.

My car is identical to yours ... same year and color ... I use the oil listed on the radiator shroud ... BMW Syn 5w-30. It's got 65,000 miles on it. Uses a quart every 4,000 miles.
