how did it damage the trunk like that if it ran into a tree? Did it fall on the car then? I would expect the bumper and all to be smashed in if it just reversed into a tree??
Leave the car in gear? This is my 2nd week learning how to drive manual gearbox and I was always told to leave it in neutral (with the parking brake on, of course).

I thought the same. There was a big branch towards the bottom of the tree that was trunk level. I wished he would have taken pics at the scene.

Nope, leave it in gear. That way if the brake fails your car will have to turn the engine to roll away.

they usually state that in the owners manual. put vehicle in reverse with parking brake applied if on inclined hills. reverse gear because it is the lowest gear on the trans. I odnt put my car in gear when I pull the e brake. but I never really park on hills either. also, as an additional failsafe, you are supposed to turn the steering wheel far left if pointing uphill or far right if pointing downhill. when the tire hits the curb, it will prevent the car from rolling any further.

Thanks for the tips, also.
But wouldnt it be first gear if it was on an incline (going up) and reverse if it's going downhill?
