GPS symbol meaning?
Does anyone know the significance of the GPS satellite symbol in the upper right hand corner of the nav screen? Seems like the little dots symbolize satellites being tracked etc, and I just realized today that the little dots in the symbol actually change!
Anyone know how this works? Would be very cool if it actually symbolize number of tracked satellites!

Very cool - does the location of the small dots signify anything?

I forget how to get into the detailed Sat Nav menu but when you do you can see how many sats have a fix on you. This number is the same as the number shown on the animated graphic you mentioned.
3 are needed to trianglulate your position, and align your car on the displayed map. If you've ever had your map showing you driving off the road you probably only had 1 or 2 sats with a fix on you.
I'm not sure 100% sure on what data is available at 3 or less and are 3 or more. I assume some of the other fuctions of the GPS system require more than 3, or perhaps they are just there for redundancy and different locations in the world and of course as you drive. The ones with the best signal to noise ration or signal strength may just hand you off to the next sat as your signal changes on a long distance cross country trip for example.
Here in CT I can usually "see" 6-7 sat icons on my screen when I am in an open area.
I know these are screenshots of the older 4:3 Nav system but the details are the same or similar. You can see the detailed info like, heading, gyro, position known(this is probably unknown at < 3 sats)
I'm by no means an expert on this so if anyone has better info please correct me as needed!

Very slick!
You can just imagine those German engineers sweating it out to make sure the number of dots equal the number of satelites seen. "Jaa, Hans - that izz correkt - theeze are thee same"...

So while we're at it, anyone know what those "wagon wheel" icons stand for?

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Aha - an old favorite. I think you said you actually spoke to NavTeq about this, right? I still say soemthing is odd with this since I have seen two of them within a mile of each other. Unless it's city, county, state, etc centers.
