Outside temperature sensor?

Hey guys, a quick one here:

I'm still getting used to driving such a nice machine (and busy making a manual gearbox second nature), and there are always little things that I'm noticing with the car.

For example, I noticed that my car's computer thinks that it's -40 degrees outside. Any clues on how to fix this? I wouldnt care if it was another car, but this is an M5.....it's gotta be 100% functional!

Your temp sensor is probably unplugged or not working. Look under the front bumper, passenger side. I think -40 is the default reading when unplugged.

mine reads +120F lately....tore my front right wheel well and managed to rip out a large chunk of plastic from the front right side of the car, nothing visible really, but still needs to be fixed....the Temp gauge is now hanging by wires.... naturally, i keep a roll of duct tape in my trunk. problem solved! ...for now.

I looked and noticed that the whole thing is missing. Apparently, the guy who owned it before me ran over/into something and damaged the wheel well liner and the piece of plastic that covers the space between the wheel and the front of the bumper. There are 2 bare wires with nothing attached to them, so I'm guessing thats where the temperature sensor was.

Anyone have any ideas of where I can get the sensor? Thanks!

It is really very cheap- $50 for the whole 'kit' at a dealer. Not sure ebay sells all the bits and bobs ... plus the dealer is easier to ensure you are getting what you need

You need the sensor, a connector shell and two pins (with wires pre-attached) to plug into the connector.

Splice the two wires onto the existing leads hanging down- solder, heat-shrink, each lead; then another heatshrink over both. Plug the two pins into the connector shell and you've repaired the wiring harness- then just mount the temp sensor into the new fender liner, connect the new connector to the back.

45 minute job

Thanks a lot, Ard! Seems like I'm gonna have to jack the car and get to work on that, see if I can identify the proper connections, heh.

While we're talking about soldering, I figured I might as well get this one out of the way, too, even though it's not related to the sensor. I still didnt think it'd require its own thread.

Anyways, I was looking at the shifter and handbrake assemblies and noticed that on the shifter, there are 2 loose wires (with bare tips). I read on the manual that the shifter is supposed to light up when the lights are on, but mine doesn't. I figured that the loose wires are the culprit but I don't know where to connect them to get the shifter to light up again. Any clues?

Yes, the parts list you need #1 and the two pieces under #3 (two of the 'bushing contact')

I've never found an online source for the #3 pieces. But in all honesty I haven't looked that hard.

No kidding! What I love best is that there arent any snobs (or don't seem to be). I've been around the net for a while and boards like this are a breath of fresh air. Not to mention that everyone gives a ton of links to get stuff. Gotta love the internet!

PS not to be a ballbreaker but.....any ideas on how to fix the shifter?
