problem with e39 getrag 6 spd

My car has almost 100K miles. Tranny at times doesn't want to go into 3rd or later gears. It doeesn't grind, it simply feels like the gates are blocked. I have found that if I push the shift lever fully to the left as if I were preparing to shift into 1st, then let it go to it's normal detent position, and shift into 3rd, it slides into 3rd and subsequent gears with no trouble. I'm wondering how likely it is that I have an external (worn?) linkage problem vs. something internal??

First thing I'd do is change the transmission fluid and bleed the clutch slave cylinder, and see if things improve if not be cured.

What's it like to get tranny parts? It seems like everyone replaces the tranny, but maybe that is just dealers. Mine has 105k and has a hard time going into 2nd and is not that smooth in the other gears. What do you think it would cost to get it rebuilt?

The selector mechanism and detents are worn out and the forks are bent. This is a common problem you can do a search there are many discussions on this issue. Unless you are a transmission guru and can tear it down and rebuild it yourself BMW sells a rebuilt trans to swap in.

Getrag won't sell parts so you're stuck getting a replacement.

Thanks, that is what I have heard, but I had hope that things were changing. I will save my pennies as I know I will need to replace it soon.

you could always try shooting a PM to LSCMAN, from his posts, sounds like he's rebuilt a few of these transmissions, so he may be able to tell you more info.
