"TIRECONTROL INACTIVE" error on Dash Display

SO for the last few months I have had the "TIRECONTROL INACTIVE" error coming up on my dashboard disply. It comes up intermittently and is not related to time, miles, or temperature driven. I have now had it into BMW three times on repair attempts. The error comes up and stays up until the car is shut down and re-started then it is cleared.

1) Took picture of error with phone camera and delivered the pictures with the car for repair. Tech reports, Replaced wheel sensor and reset the system. Ok for about a week.

2) Took picture of error with phone camera and delivered the pictures with the car for repair. Tech reports, No error codes found tested system. Reset the system and noted that if problem comes back will need to replace module.

3) Took picture of error with phone camera and delivered the pictures with the car for repair. Car is in for module replacement and I am waiting for its return.

I will update once I have it again.

BTW; The loaner 3 series they give me when my car is in for service has terrible interior ergonomics. I simply do not like the exterior and find the interior not functional for the driver. This concerns me as I was looking at the new M3 as a possible replacement, but not unless the interior is updated...

Is this frequency of occurrance ~1x/week? Have they checked the battery (do any other electronics, eg clock, reset)?

Can't help here...but I wonder if mine even works? I've drastically changed my tire pressure and never have seen a warning.

Search is your friend.

This is my favorite thread on this topic. Seem that all of us have the problem from time to time.

Tire Control Inactive ?

I think post #12 from Greg is a really interesting idea.

After reading your post, I wonder if you accidentally hit the tire control button from time to time while driving. This would give you the "tirecontrol inactive" message.

Great question as I've always wondered whether mine works too.

So here you go.

I check my tire pressure weekly. Always set at 42 for all four tires with GY Eagle F1 GS-D3.

I went out for an early Saturday morning drive last week. Then all of a sudden, a mile from my house - BLING sound, then on the OBD "TYRE DEFECT". So I said WTF, I've never seen that warning before. So I pulled over and checked each tire. When I got to the right rear tire, the tire looked low so I checked air pressure. 11 psi!! Whoooaa. Bad.

So I used the tire inflator mobility kit, I removed the goo first as I only want to inflate the tire. Pumped it to 45 psi, drove the beast directly to tire store, tire repaired in 1 hour. Done! I'm out driving the beast again.

So thanks to BMW for the Tire Pressure sensor. If it wasnt for that, I would have probably damaged my rims as I would have most likely kept on driving until I really feel the rims eating the tires already.

What was the repair? A valve stem replacement is fine, but personally I would not run a tire that was damaged and repaired on these cars-- just not worth it. I think you're the first one I've heard of in quite some time where the can of goo actually worked!

No goo, doug. Sounds like a deft load of air and normal patch job. This has been my plan too (fingers crossed I never have to).

Hi Doug. I guess you misread my post. I did not use the tire goo. I also did not have a "damaged tire". I only had a slight air leak due to a broken glass imbeded on the tire. I only use the tire inflator (no Goo) to inflate my tires.

FYI, I have tire inflator on all my cars. Always in the trunk.
I never had use spare tire on my other cars.

Most tire issues are minor air leaks due to nail imbeded on the tire. So all I do is pump the tire to its maximum air pressure it can handle, drive the car to the next exit, find a tire shop, get the tire repaired and I'm off and running again.

Tire goo I refuse to use as it will mess up your tire. So in this instance, I did the same thing. I pulled over, checked tire pressure, it was only 11 psi, so I grabbed the mobility kit, removed by unscrewing the Goo, pumped the tire to 45 psi, drove to the nearest tire station, got the tire repaired, and I'm off driving again.

Make sense?

You're right I did misread the post, and the goo does make a mess. Still, on some tires patching will invalidate the tire's speed rating. I'm just saying that would be very cautious, and if you track (or run at very high speeds) it I'd replace the tire.

The issue has been corrected by replacing the tire control module part number 61-35-2-695-675. According to the techs notes there was a bad connection at the module that would intermittently open one of the sensors and cause the fault.

So far its been good.
