Rattle, Pinging noise when accelerating/braking

I get a strange rattle/pinging/creaking noise. Its definately outside the car and happens when accelerating from very slow speeds < 10mph and braking too.
Any idea's what this could be? Its actually quite loud, loud enough for pedestrians to hear it, and for it to echo back off cars and walls.

Sorry I can't give you an answer. I can only sympathise as I have the same problem.

My indie can't find anything wrong (other than he can hear it too).

I assume it will get worse, at which point we may discover the cause.

Mine certainly isn't front bushings as I replaced them all and it didn't cure the problem.

If/when I find out I will post the answer.

Small pieces of stone stucked at tires?
I have the sound sometimes.
It sounds bit like my winter tyres(studded).
So I guess it would be stones.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is a metallic sound in my case. It isn't even a 'solid' sound like a 'clunk'. It's a weak metallic sound, hard to describe.

I checked my tyres just in case, but no stones.

If it is the same sound I am hearing then at least I am not the only one. Mine sounds like there is a marble stuck in the engine somewhere! It can't be related to rod knock because it does not only happen under load. It starts making this noise when the engine is good and warm and when I am just cruising (engine between 1500 and 2800 rpm). I also does NOT sound like the VANOS noise described here, but that does not mean that the VANOS is not the culprit. I have searched and SEARCHED through this board and others and have not been able to learn what this sound is or where it is coming from!

Could it be the heat shields on the brakes or exhaust?

I had one crack on a 3 series - took about 2 months to pin point it!!

Richie.

Yeah it could be a heatsheild, had an issue with debris stuck there a few months back.

Another description of the sound is like gravel hitting the suspension.

How are the rubber joints on the drive shaft?

I just had to have my rod bearings replaced, two were bad, and it did not make the noise only under load, you could hear it all of the time. It was quiet when the oil was cold, but after warm-up, you could hear it all of the time. It gets loader under load, but you can still hear it so I would be careful. Getting it fixed right away may save you from having to replace the rods.

Mine was my exhaust bottoming out on the crossmember that is supposed to hold it up using rubber bushings that had been compressed too far...
