Question about chopping mufflers

I love the sound it produces but is there anything to worry about mechanically by doing this? I've heard some say you lose power because of a loss of back pressure but since I dont know much about cars I'm not sure if this is true. I know I most likely wouldn't pass emissions but....I dont care. I just dont want to hurt my performance in anyway and was hoping you more car-savy members can fill me in on the pros and cons of straight pipes.

Also for those of you that have it done on your beasts, can you do your part to keep the noise down if you want? I'd like to be able to choose when I am obnoxious....

If you leave the cats in place the loss in backpressure will not affect anything (as it will be minimal)

Unless your state does a visual inspection or a decible check, I don't know why it wouldn't pass emissions (assuming you have the cats in place and no CEL).
