New M5 owner, CPS question

Hello All,

New owner of a 2000 M5, only 38k miles, great shape overall. Previously has a E36 M3, a great car, kinda out grew it (in age and size). The M5 seems to be a good fit for me at this point in my life (mid fifties). I'm a fairly serious DIY guy, so will try to do most repairs myself on the M5. Annoying that there is no repair manual to purchase for this car, so this forum with all the great info is essential for my sanity!

I just pulled a code from the car:

exhaust camshaft Vanos position control, cyl 5-8
exhaust camshaft position sensor cyl 1-4
crankshaft/camshaft position correlation cyl 1-4

I did a search of previous threads, and wow, a bunch of info and discussion.
Seems like of the four CPS sensors on the motor, I might need to replace two of them? The exhaust side for cyl 5-8, and the exhaust side cyl 1-4 ??

My luck is these are the hardest to get to, right?

My other dumb question is which side of the motor is cylinder 1-4 and cylinder 5-8? I'm also a bit uncertain where these sensors are located.

I need to find some kind of a diagram or parts schematic I guess. Really not used to not having a Bentley manual or something to fall back on. Pretty old school I guess, eh?

I'll clear the codes and see if they come back, but I'm already getting ready mentally to do this job.

Thanks!

Do exhaust 1-4 first.... they are interrelated. See if it clears it up.

Ok, thanks!

So is cylinder 5-8 on the driver side or the passenger side? I may end up replacing both exhaust CPS units, but just wanted to get oriented correctly.

Thanks all!

Cylinders 5-8 are on the driver side. I just put an exhaust cam sensor in on that side and did a quick little write-up on it. I have never changed one before and it took me 30 mins to an hour to change it. That also includes the time to get the proper tools out.

I would probably just go ahead and change both because I only got the crank/cam correlation and exhaust #5-8 codes. You also got a code for #1-4 and I don't see why you would get this unless both are bad.

I ordered mine from Circle BMW and it ended up being $105 with shipping included. That was the best price I found on it and Circle has always had great service and prices in the past when I have ordered things from them.

Thanks for the info! I'll try contacting Circle BMW.

BTW, when you changed your CPS, did you get it from the top of the engine or the bottom ? (oh, nevermind, just found your install writeup, explains all, nice!)
