5 series safe? [IIHS E60 5-series crash results]

My wife calls me this morning and tells me that all of the 5 series cars are at the bottom of the list when it comes to being safe , and went on to say that they (The Today show) were comparing our cars to Kias , anybody else catch this?

It was a 2008 5 series...

Not our E39 which is rated highly for crash worthiness...

You plannin' on having an accident?

Actually, it was the 2008 5 series (a redesign, according to the article on the Internet), as drallen pointed out ... our cars are rated highly.

If you want to be safe drive a Greyhound bus ...

+1. And the Kia came in first? Maybe it was Hyundai.

Another plus for the Kia's is that it does 0-60mph in 21 seconds! IMPRESSIVE

I heard that a lot of car manufacturers build their cars to do well in crash tests, the likes of Renault pay particular car to the NCAP testing. BMW and other more prestigious marquees like Mercedes build their cars to withstand crashes at might higher speeds and because of that do not do as well in the lower speed tests due to the stiffer nature of the cars.
I for one rather have a car safer at high speeds than low.

A couple of comments. First, often times popular press confuses crashworthiness with safety, and considering the former, it often comes down to how much it costs to fix a car involved in a relatively low speed 5-10mph crash. BMWs don't do well in that comparison b/c parts and labor are so expensive.

When considering safety, the "star" ratings only compare cars in the same relative classes, and it's based on weight. So if a subcompact Kia has 5 star rating, for example, it means it comes out on top as compare to other subcompacts in the same weight class. That is almost meaningless in a collision between a Kia and a large SUV, though in theory the Kia would do better in that confrontation as compared to another subcompact with fewer stars to its rating.

Finally, as you can see, different designs can garner different results. The e39 did much better as compared to its 4000 lb. weight/size class competition than the newer e60, but again, we don't know what the criteria were. Even then, apples to apples, you have to be sure the tests included offset impacts. Often certain cars will do well in straight-on barrier tests but in the more common offset collisions in the real world (like when the car in the opposite lane hits a car left fender to left fender), people might get killed or seriously injured. Such collisions expose chassis weaknesses more readily than square impacts.

All of this being equal, I'd still rather be in my e39 than an e60!

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
