RS America??

Although I (think I ) dispatched a 993 this evening on the highway (see other thread), I still would very much like to own a Carrera one day.

If my ship came in (ie. a 5,500 point Nasdaq!) and I had my druthers, I would just buy a 993TT like tomorrow and own both.

Realistically, however, I would need to kiss the Beast goodbye in order to get the TT. But I digress...

My reason for inquiring is that there's another Carrera I can afford now [if I sell my Tiger...damn Nasdaq ].

It's an RS America - this one is quasi-local...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...999954&r=0&t=0

It's a bit old-school and decidedly slow in today's world, but its relative obscurity kinda makes me warm and fuzzy, PLUS it would obviously be a neat track car. Only 701 came to the continent.

Anyone cross paths with one of these? Thoughts? How's this price? They're asking $10k cdn MORE for it on the lot than online, but ebay already speaks for itself...

Thanks
Alps

The RS America is popular with the Porsche Club crowd...especially here in Seattle.

I think I would look for a 993 C2. I think higher mileage examples are comparble in price to the 964 RS America.

Alpy, my friend had a Silver RS America before and I have driven it. I also had a 984 Carrera 2 convertible before so I can sort of compare the 984 Carrera's and the RS a little. I find my old Carrera 2 understeered more than the M5 I have now and this also applies to the RS America. The RS America and the Carrera 2 were both quite tricky to drive when at the limit because when the car oversteers, with the engine at the back, it comes around quite quickly and I've been caught in a surprise before and found myself facing the wrong way of traffic(thank god there were no cars). The RS America doesn't have power steering as I recall, or minimal assist if any, because it was a workout to park in tight places and that clutch was quite heavy. It would be a great track car but definitly not a daily driver. Plus, it doesn't have air-con but when do we really need air-con in Vancouver anyways. Anyways, the RS is a great car and I love that Turbo style whale tail too.

BTW, I drove by London Motorcars on Burrard today and there are two 996 Turbo's (1 yellow and 1 silver I think) and there's a E46 Yellow M3 there too.

They had a Ferrari 360 Modena for sale about a month ago for 288 000$, can't dealership realize that it's not the time to markup exotic cars...but they've since sold it so I guess there's a fool in Vancouver who paid 50 000$ over MSRP for a Ferrari!

Second, another sign that people are selling their cars is if you look at The Urban garage in West Vancouver, they have 3 996TT for sale! 1 Zanzibar red, 1 silver Tiptronic and 1 black

Didn't they have an RS in the movie Bad Boy a couple of years ago?

The one in that bad boy movie is a Turbo 3.6 which is quite rare. There's a metallic purple one here that I use to see running around the English Bay/downtown area all the time.

When I first saw Bad Boy, I didn't knew cars all that well so I thought it was a 993 turbo but after watching it a couple of years later knowing cars better, I observed that it wasn't the 993 turbo. I since then wondered which model it was until you answered my question...Thanks Serge

Alpy, weren't you interested in buying a Turbo 3.6 a long time ago?

1997 993TT

Alps,

I traded in a 1997 993 twin turbo for my M5 and many times I have lamented that decision. Before I get full flamage from the members on this board let me say that I LOVE MY M5! It's just not a Porsche or more obviously a two seat sports car. Whenever I visit my local dealership all the salesmen that I know ask me how I like the M5. My reply is that it's no Porsche... All in all a superb vehicle but doesn't have the sheer in-your-face acceleration of the twin turbo. At the same time I also purchased a normally aspirated 993 Coupe and simply loved that car as well. Two kids later both cars have been sold and I own a model 2000 E39 M5. Life doesn't get much better.

Check out a recent write-up from Greg who owns both an M5 and new 996TT. While the 996 car is totally different from the older 993 it's a superb summary and will give you some great insights.

Go Nasdaq!!!

I was talking to some PCA guys at Thunderhill once and a very popular track car for them is the 87-88 Carrera's. I guess they got a bigger engine and some improvements and aren't as expensive as a 993. In fact, that vintage is more popular than the 91-93 Carrera 2. I would go to www.roadfly.com and go to the Porsche boards and ask them.

After checking parts prices for Porsches, I found out why so many guys track M3's instead.
