You might want to check out this site www.thewaxtest.com. Looks interesting. I'm not pimping for them, just would like to hear views from you more "wax experienced" folks.
I was reading the site yesterday and was impressed with their ability to be non biased. I am a Zymol fan, and detailer and was a little surprised with the fact that they got only a little better depth of quality with the Concours, but other then that everything seemes fine. I am a professional detailer and completley agreed with their assesment of Klasse. Tried, disliked it. Bottom line, use a quality wax; P21S, Griot's, Zymol, Pinnacle and get quality results. Most other sites that I have found seem to be favorable to one side or the other. This one really seemed fare.
I thought it was a terrific web site as well. A couple of points did strike me though:
First, they mention that the test panels were procured at a local junk yard. I believe they were all from 90s era GM cars. Isn't there a BIG difference in the quality of paint on American cars vs. German?
Secondly, they really, really trashed the Zainos stuff. Without opening this Pandora's Box again (after the cool comparo that Greg did the other week) I was surprised that they didn't care for the entire "Zainos Process" at all.
There is a big difference in the quality of paint between German vs. American. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have excellent quality paint. Opel and VW, less so, but they are still better than your GM or Ford. GM and Ford produce much more cars at a smaller price, and they are notorioius for crappy paint jobs.
I was similarly surprised about their attitude toward Zaino Bros. Wax. I really like their product. If I don't have any Zymol, I will use the Zainos stuff.
Everyone is surprised when someone knocks Zaino, because there is a near-cult-like following of the product. However, I have now seen, in addition to my test, 3 other fairly scientific tests, and every one of them came to the same conclusion. Zaino is good, but in no way better than competition costing a lot less.
I think you can explain the fanaticism by looking at the way the product is marketed. It is intentionally made hard to get, and word of mouth is the only advertising. You can't buy it over the phone, you can't use a credit card, you can't buy it over the web. This enhances the "mystique." There are some "distributors" who can take your order, but there is no way for you to find out who they are, and the fact is Zaino won't let any "real" distributors carry the product - only existing user-zealots, and THEY are under strict orders not to sell on the web, and not to carry any competitive products.
So people think they're in some sort of "cool club", "in the know" when they use Zaino, and therefore they are convinved it is the best.
To its credit, it is easy to apply, and has a nice shine and a great feel. BUT it isn't better. Period.
