Can anyone tell me how to set-up the "Check Control Display" to
show the time without having to press the Remote Control button
each time I start the Beast ?
If time is one of the items that you can cycle through, and you leave it set to time when you shut down, it should be there next time you start. (at least, that seems to be how mine works.)

Greg is right -- it should stay in memory. The older 5ers (our '98 for example) does *not* remember this, so if you have an older E39 that might be the problem.
Our 2000 M5 and 2001 X5 remember the time position as well -- like you, I keep it on all the time.

It's a 2002 and doesn't remember when re-started. My '98 540
didn't either when I first got it but one day it came back from a
recall rembering to show the time.

My 2002 M5 doesn't remember that I had the MID set for time either. My '99 540i did that and I miss it. Another small gripe on the '02 is the Nav not remembering the settings such as no split screen, etc. I noticed that the computer screen while split can't show ETA. I used it all the time on my 540i. Once I get the CDs and start using the nav, I might like the split screens but until then...

BMW Cust Serv just confirmed this "forgetfulness" is a programing problem. A fix is "on the list" eta unknown.

That's interesting since mine remembers what I had displayed even after the upgrade. Maybe there are different versions floating around?
But I did discover the neat feature that you can choose which items to be shown. I chose date, time, and range. I'll add the others if I need them for a trip or something.
Who need to scroll through 12 different items?
