Stupid Dinan CAI questions...

I'm thinking about this upgrade, after I have my 3:45 Diff put on. I was wondering...

Where do these filters reside?

Do they get wet, in bad weather?

How do you access the filters when it's time to clean them?

What exactly does the stage 2 software adjust, or change?

Dinan CAI

Lupo,

Not a dumb question by any means. I installed the Dinan cold air induction by myself and it really wasn't that hard. The conical shaped filters hang upside down at the end of the trick carbon fiber 'arms' (for lack of a better word). I'd say that they may be in line with the fog lights, although I might be going too low with that analogy. While I don't think there's any danger of getting them wet, I sure as heck wouldn't go through deep water. Common sense sort of dictates here.

The Stage II software 'supposedly' reprograms the car's brain to be able to deal with more airflow from the new setup. Takes about 5 minutes to download and it's free with the purchase of the CAI.

Hope this helps,

DWP

P.S. You can access the filters by taking off the black plastic wheel wells. A couple of screws hold it in place and you just pry it out of there.

Thanks DD,

How do you get at them to clean the filters? Apart from looking absolutely awesome, would you install them if you had to do it all over again? What I mean is do they actually do anything?

I got photos for you!

Hey Lupo,

I took some photos of my CAI Installation. This might help you with your questions.

Where do these filters reside?
They are located just above fog lights.

Do they get wet, in bad weather?
Dealer recommended NOT to drive over the standing water.

How do you access the filters when it's time to clean them?
Dinan now recommends replacing every 50K miles instead of cleaning them.

What exactly does the stage 2 software adjust, or change?
Remove 155 govern, raise rev limit to 7300 and quicker throttle responds. Might be more. HOWEVER, SOFTWARE IS NOT FREE! Around $400!!! Please let us know if anyone got the software for free.

Can I install CAI?

Lupo,

After watching the tech install my CAI. I think I could have install CAI myself. Only hardest part would be relocating water pump. If you see my photo album (check out the comments) you would know why.

Rare,

GREAT JOB chronicling this installation, and thank you for answering my questions in such detail. I noticed there was no oil on the filters, is that right? How do the K&N keep the dirt and dust out without any oil? What is that black "shroud" around each filter with the Dinan logo on it?

Full of questions...

Oops sorry, just read your comments. The black "shroud" is a water resistant cover. Very interesting...

The un- oiled filter still baffles me.

I installed the Dinan CAI myself and paid over $400 for the Stage 2 program. No freebees for me.

phew... now I don't feel as bad shelling out money for the stage 2 software... anyways, I was wondering.. has anyone thought of putting on different filters for the CAI? It looks like we might be able to put in different kinds of conical or mushroom filters.... anyone tried and felt any difference?
