Cup Holders

I've searched through the posts here and I'm surprised that there are only 1 or 2 somewhat offtopic mentions of the inadequate cupholders in the Beast.

I'm wondering if there is any known remedy... whether it's a BMW part or not. I've seen some aftermarket cupholders that sit on the center console, but that's not at all what I'm looking for (sorry, I'm picky:-). For me, the solution needs to appear to have been designed as part of the car.

The 7-series car has cupholders in a similar position to the M5, but they are significantly better.

Any ideas?

I read somewhere that BMW and/or the "M" engineers really think that America's infatuation with cup holders is quite humorous. Why would we want to drink anything while driving their "ultimate driving machines." I have to agree with them. Mine works fine for the amount of times I use it.

I think everyone has accepted that the cupholders have no solution. I do agree with you about the aftermarket cupholders. Not only are they expensive, but they are so butt.

I must admit I find it hard to understand the obsession with cup holders in the US. I don't think I have ever used a cup holder in a car in my life. Is this to enable cups of coffee, coke etc to be consumed whilst driving along or for the passengers to enjoy? If its the former then the sooner they get removed the better as the last thing I want is somebody behind me drinking coffee whilst driving. Its bad enough with people on mobile phones in their ears or reading maps without them drinking as well.

Well thats my rant over with so I'll just put my flak jacket on

I'd like to follow up my own post with a simple observation and an apology.

I should have searched for "cupholder" rather than "cup holder"!

Thanks for all the info, and the tolerance of this newbie

Just don't drink... Just other day, my passenger spill coffee in my car. My date decided to get the coffee to go and I couldn't say no. And go figure, she spill the coffee as I expected. (no, I wasn't driving fast.) At least, she managed to spill on the floor mat so damage is minimal.

As far as cup holders... Man, they sucks. Did you check to see if new 7 cupholders work on M5?

They do suck!!!

However I agree, I don't drive as much with drinks... I take bottle water and put the lid on and leave it in the arm rest.

A can of coke is about all the cup holder will hold, and only on a straight highway.

Decent cupholders would be a nice creature feature in the new models... I care less about split screen GPS. But a useful cupholder would be nice.

I agree with the Germans. People should not be drinking and driving, especially in ///M cars. As for passengers, I would never let anyone into the car if they are drinking anything except water.

what's wrong with cup holders? they hold your cups so you can drive without having to deal with a hot cup of coffee in your lap. Its a cup HOLDER, not a cup DRINKER. I would think you guys in europe would need that more, your weather is always cold, dont you need your coffee in the morning ?
