Can a 2008 550i approach the E39 M5?

I am a previous owner of a 2003 E39 M5. Most amazing car ever. I miss that car everyday.

Picking up a 2008 550i w/sport package and sport auto tran.

I know this car has 360hp and 360lbft/torque.

The E39 M5 had 394 HP and not sure on torque. How far apart are these 2 cars?

I mean, with some mods to engine and suspension....could the gap be closed enough to satisfy someone in a 550i the way I was addicted to my E39 M5?

Interesting conversation to say the least.

PM board member "550chris" and ask him. He has a modded 550; and I'm pretty sure he's driven a lot of E39 M5's (used to work for Dinan), stock and modded. He can give you a good feel.

Just out of curiousity,
Why did you ditch the M5? The 550i is nice, but will never be an M5...even with similar horsepower. Ditto with the auto tranny. Ever consider another E39 M5...or dare I say E60 M5?

The ONLY reason why I ditched the M5 was because of my wife. I had been a bod boy and she wanted me to suffer a bit and made me trade it in. I lost about 10K. We are since divorced.

I love the E60 M5 but i dont love its transmission for what I will be able to do with it. Thats why the E39 was so good.

1. Jump in
2. DSC OFF
3. Pop clutch and go...

The low end torque was great and the way the car shifted made you feel empowered. I thought it was also very luxurious inside. Just an amazing car.

Also, I beat the piss out of it for a while. That car is tough as hell and built to last (- clutch).

I would love another one right now but the 2000-2003 technology does feel abit dated for me. I like new stuff..

I am looking for that special E39 though but I have to be impressed like a mofo to buy it.

Looking for an old picture from 2003 of the car....and will post

I agree with everything but this. I would say the clutch does not do well unless you treat it with respect.
Or do you mean everything but the clutch?

Yeah, I meant everything but the clutch.

Everything else is built like a Panzer tank molded for speed.

The new E60 comes with a manual and I believe the 08's you can turn off the DSC completely.

Ya the 08 E60 comes with a Manual 6Sp but you cant disable the DSC 100%. You are stuck with MDM.

Plus, the E60 doesnt drive like the E39. Yeah, its nice but lacks low end torque. Its more of a track car.
