Dinan stops supplying parts - HELP! Flywheel!

I cant beleive this.... I bought the Lightweight Alum Flywheen and clutch from dinan about 3yrs ago...

They discontinued it because they werent selling enuf of them...

The clutch is good, but I need a new insert for the flywheel...

Called Dinan and they said they have no clue who made the parts and prob cant get me anything... They suggested I upgrade to their dual mass kit (only $2600!!) I already paid $2900 for mine...

My clutch is fine, but just need the insert and poss a pressure plate... Tech support was totally unhelpfull and said they would have to check with Steve Dinan as he would be the only one who knew... They said that could take 3-5 days, while my car is on the lift...

I cant beleive they dont know who made the part, how to get a replacement or anything!!!!!

HELP

Scott

A lot of flywheels (replaceable insert type) use a similar insert type or pattern. See if Fidanza makes one and try that. I know clutchnet.com has flywheels with insert type. You could try them as well.

Once you find out be sure to post up what worked and who you bought it from.

Here's the original thread:

HELP! Dinan is frying me alive! My Flywheel is gone!

Probably moved because it isn't an M5 but I suppose the Dinan flywheel is the same, as every other lightweight flywheel is identical for e39 540i and e39 M5.......

I'm not getting into the politics!

I didn't move it, and can't tell why it was moved.

IF this is an M5 flywheel, then no matter what car it is used on in your case, this thread is of interest to this forum. (If it is 540 specific it will get moved eventually.) IMHO. Good luck.

Let's hope Dinan recognizes this is an opportunity to showcase some customer service.

I thought I remember hearing that the Dinan M5 flywheel was a modded BMW one?

The dual-mass one is. The aluminium single-mass wasn't.

Wait until Steve Dinan replies. Aluminum flywheels and their associated steel service inserts for E39 are not high turnover items, so you need to anticipate substantial delays. This flywheel design isn't seeing track racer duty or use like M3. There's a good chance you are customer #1 asking for this service part. Accept the fact that you ain't getting one overnight.

Common sense tells me that the M5 and 540i flywheels that Dinan was selling within that "date range" would be made by the same mfr. Ask them if they've switched suppliers for the sister M5 flywheel. If not, ask for an insert for their M5 flywheel from that same date and it should be the same supplier. The only difference between M5 and 540i OEM flywheel is the timing ring design on the outside perimeter. Same should hold true for aftermarket flywheels of the same type from the same mfr.

The differences between 540i and M5 flywheel application are very minor, so there's a 99% chance the steel swept area insert is the same where the mfr is the same.

I would check with UUC as well, their clutches use a very similar type of insert to what you are describing. They may be able to machine something for you. Do you know how many MM it is? 240, 280?

Finally spoke to Phillip @ Dinan...

They have 1 insert laying around... They will have no more Alum Flywheels when I need one, nor any clutches that will fit my flywheel if I need a new clutch....

I am going to have the same problem with Suspension (I have stage three) but they cant tell what combination of the parts I have.....

Last $$ I spend w/ Dinan...

All the above suggestions have been great, but sending my Flywheel to someone cost time and $$ for a $99.00 part.

Dinan should be ashamed that they dont put part#'s on the parts or keep tract of where they get their parts from... I could understand if this was a 15yr old part, but 3yrs???

You would think that they should know who made the parts for them.. unless they reckon that if you find out that their $xxx flywheel is actually a rebadged Brand X which was 1/3 the price
