Well I'm confused too and I'm not there. If you are asking if you got ripped off because the car you thought you bought was an M5, the answer is yes. The E39 M5 only comes with a manual, your horse power guess is closer to a 540i than a M5.

From your description you have a 540iA Sport. You mention the steering wheel which has the M logo on it, that is correct for a sport. Your triptronic automatic should also have a manual slap stick and your door jams should also have the M badging. I'll bet your wheels are 17". The M5 on the rear is not correct. If you thought you were buying an M5 you were seriously ripped off. Go back to the dealer immediately!

Like everyone else has said, if you payed the price of an M5, you probably were ripped off. If you payed the price of a 540i, then maybe it's not so bad.
I think I'd rather have an M5 badged as a 530i than a 540ia badged as an M5.
I'd be talking to the BBB or BMWNA if you bought it from a BMW dealer and it was represented as an M5
Take care and hope it works out.

That's my opinion, although I might not agree with it.
If your engine doesn't look like this, it's not an M5:
