Bad brakes?

I have a 2003 525 automatic with sports package Is it normal for my car to roll back when parking on a 3-5 degree drive way, when I apply just the hand brakes with out putting the car into P(parking gear)? One more question, I can hear my brakes when I use the foot brakes at a stop light, it that normal? It’s not supper loud but I can hear a grinding noise. I use to own a Honda Prelude and when I apply the foot brakes it was silent.

The parking brake on the E39 is known to be very weak. In fact, we had a thread on this about a month or so ago. It basically boils down that you need to get it adjusted every couple of months. As far as the noise, that is not normal. If your brake pad warning light is not on, I would assume you may have a rock stuck between your rotor and backing plate. check to see if this is the case and if so, you can remove it with a long object.
