Badge placement..

Was wondering if anybody had a definitive answer on the placement of the 'M5' trunklid badges?

Looking at www.bmwe34m5.com it seems there's a range from 16-17.5mm for the distance from the bottom of the badges to the bottom painted edge, 26mm from right/bottom corner of the '5' to the edge of the painted part, and between 8-10mm between the 'M' and the '5'.

Not talking about a huge range there, but would like to try to get it as perfect as possible.

TIA,

I think that is about right.
If you look at some other M5's they will all vary by a few mm's but if you just look at the badge with the naked eye you cant tell the difference. So as long long as your within them measurements it should look right.

Trevor,

I asked the same question a few weeks ago and was pointed to that link on the FAQ. I cut out a paper template as per the dimensions above, stuck it to the boot (aka trunk) lid, and then stuck the badges on. This is the only picture that I have of the badge since I stuck it on:

Regards

John

Alrighty, that sounds good.

Just wanted to make sure nobody had an absolutely definitive answer on the dimensions.

Thanks!

As far as I have found out the measurements should be 18 and 26 mm.
Listed on the swedish M5 Registry is a detailed photo: http://www.e34m5.se/forum/modellbeteckning.asp

I would say 8-10 mm between the M and the 5 is too much. 6mm is more like it. But when it comes to that I really dont know exactly what has been stated by BMW, but by taking measurements on a car that never had its badges stripped off I came to the conclusion that 5.5-6mm is correct. By looking on the photo you can clearly see that half of A (18mm), 9 mm, is too far apart. So 6mm is closer to the truth, I think.
18 and 26 mm are numbers that I got out of reading BMW material.

But if you look in some sales brochures you will find a Sebring grey car that does not follow these measurements. The whole thing was placed many mms further up, by BMW!

This comes up from time to time. Mine was debadged from new, so I don't really care!

But with reference to Simon's post in erik's touring thread, could it be possible that badges weren't all put in with the exact same places due to the handbuild nature of the cars?

"Das looken zie gut, Hans?"

"Ja, ist close enuff, Fritz."
