Got the beast back from servicing - NOT HAPPY

I had the beast in for service and repairs yesterday and spent $1K for parts and labour for the following:

-change leaking oil pan gasket
-oil and filter change
-replace air filter
-replace spark plugs
-replace distributor cap and rotor
-replace oxygen sensor
-lubricate clutch pedal <<<<

The beast runs just as well or better than it did before I took it in for service.

However, there is a VERY noticable increase in the engine noise entering the passenger compartment and it seems to be coming from under the dash on the drivers side.

What could the possible causes of this be? A ventilation system hose knocked loose from lubricating the clutch pedal? Something shifted or knocked loose as a result of raising the engine to change the oilpan gasket?

The mechanic that did the service indicated that the air filter was quite dirty so I thought for a moment that the increased noise was intake related. On further reflection though I'm hearing all the engine related noises louder than before, intake, valve train and the fan when the fan clutch is engaged.

This is one of those "It wasn't doing that before I gave you the car" situations which none of us ever like to be involved in.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Maybe they've taken out the air-con filter and not put another in?

Are the garage sure that items removed to carry out the works have been replaced in their original locations ......it sounds like the undertrays or some other insulating panels , perhaps around the glovebox area , may have been left loose .......

Good call Tony ......micro filter sounds a likely suspect !

Oh I don't know Stevie .....you tend to get at least one guy who's worked on Bm's for 5 years , even if he is surrounded by a load of spotty teenagers who don't give a toss !

There is a big fat grommet at the base of the steering collumn
where it exits the car and passes through the bulkhead.
I'll bet that its missing or been disturbed...quite possible.

If its not in place you will see daylight behind the pedals with the engine
compartment lid up, and also notice extra heat around the feet too !

Its tricky to put back into place...so for a grand bill,
take it back and get them to do it for you !

Regards,

Alan.

Alan

Is this RH side or LH side? I assume you mean the one on the passenger side for Euro ( LHD ) cars.

Update.................

Problem resolved and traced to the grommet that seals the bulkhead around the steering column as predicted by another helpful board member.

It turns out it was disturbed during the process of changing leaking oilpan gasket.

All is well now or at least for the moment.

Thanks for the feedback.
