Going for a service next week ...

Car is up for a major service, so I've booked it into a small independant in Glasgow. My Honda might not be ready for Spa & the Ring next month, so if not I'll be taking the M5!

List is:
Inspection II
Valve clearances
Brembo disks & DS2500 pads all round - the Mintex 1155s have deposited all over the disks and the brakes are shaking more than I do after a night on the vino
Fit new water pump (thanks to Nilconut)
Fit new oil tempreture switch to hopefully sort out the low oil temp prob
Motul RBF brake fluid
New MAF (old one might be ok, but I might as well fit the new one)
Hopefully Fix the "SLS Warning"
Investigate burning smell occassionally under full throttle & high revs that comes through the ventilation (not aircon related, it's currently broken and staying that way for the meantime)
Tighten up steering box
Investigate knocking from front suspension - aim to fix it next time as I'll probably poly bush everything if the EDC is getting refitted

I'll be printing out all the good advice on here and giving them that with the car - sure they're good, but might as well leave them it as reference - not sure they'll have serviced many M5s...

If Mike's man manages to get the EDC rebuild sorted before about 15th August then I will be fully refitting that to the car as well before I go on track.

Currently mulling over the chain tensioner upgrade, but as much as I search on here I can't find anything that says how many hours labour it might be - anyone know? Does it help that water pump is being done anyway??

Also, think the wiper tensioner is bust - am I right in thinking this is a very expensive job??

Thanks

Phew .....quite an exhaustive list .......I wouldn't bother fitting a MAF if the original is not coming up as faulty on a diagnostic .

S50B32 chain tensioner upgrade should take no longer than an hour !

Cheers - I've just ordered it from the dealer as well!

I know what you mean about the MAF, it's just I'd rather fit the new one then never have to worry about it failing

Stephen, remember (brake disc's) -- I can get any genuine bits with good discounts, I know Eastern have a tensioner on the shelf, probably get 20% off as Drencher never collected it. Just noticed this thread.
Cheers.

Doh! Forgot Phil.... just ordered a tensioner from Douglas Park in Glasgow ... don't think it's much anyway.

Disks from GSF (brembos) for about £170 and about that again for the pads from motorsport world.

Handed over my pride and joy this morning - bloke at the garage was a gent and seemed to know his E34s as well.

There is too much work for him to do in one go as his colleague is off on holiday, so he'll do the brakes & Inspection II today then do the valve clearances on the cold engine in the morning - water pump and tensioner will wait till next week.

I had to get a train :-(

Just got the car back .....

£726.15.

This didn't include changing either the water pump or fitting the new cambelt tensioner - he didn't have time so it will go back in for that.

Nothing wrong engine wise, in fact all in good condition, except the viscous coupling for the fan is faulty which means it doesn't cut in when the water heats up.

Impressed with service, bloke was nice and seemed honest - certainly knew the car well enough and I'll add him to the recommended Indys thread!

Need to do this lot when I put the new suspension on - explains wooly steering:
o/s track rod ends have play and boots burst
play in steering idler bush
play in o/s/f ARP drop link - replace both
Reaction arm bush splitting

Slight sweat on gearbox tail shaft oil seal
Slight sweat at diff n/s seal
Exahust back box mounting brackets missing from bodywork (!) - need to get some welded on.

All in all I'm happy - at least I know everything that's wrong.

Also got the name of a breakers in glasgow who specialises in BMWs so I can see if I can get aircon working again.

Car feels good, but new DS2500s need well ran in so I've not properly driven it yet.

Oh, he fitted the new MAF and the car ran like a dog! Splutterred it's way up the revs - refitted old one and all fine.

Once I get a chance I'll get pics/part numbers off the new one - don't know if it's a faulty unit or the wrong part - so much for an ebay bargaiN!
