elekta underside

the registered importer has finally sent me some pics of my elekta. it has been one long frustrating wait....near unbearable seeing as I bought the car in february, shipped in april, and it's been in california since may. they finally turned in the paper work to the DOT and if all goes well, it will be available for pickup a month from today...or so they say.

so I get these pics, and mind you, I'm in for the long haul and such, but my 530iT's underside is spotless. No sign of rust, no oily areas, nada....

take a look at this underside and tell me what you think. I have no judgement because I've never seen the underside of an M5 before, and don't know what to make of what these pics indicate.

The front plate would have been stuck on with these white double sided sticky pad things.. When you pull the plates off, half the pad gets left behind... These are easily cleaned off, so don't worry about that. Same goes for the rear plates.

The car would look better with clear indicators, front and rear, along with silver (orange flashing bulbs). The underside looks pretty clean, yes there is some oxidisation visible, but with some lubricant and a wire brush you can soon make those vanish. A clean car considering!!! Why is it all taking so long?

US-federalization takes from 6 Months to 1 year from the car entering an US-port and the DOT/EPA-process costs anything between USD 6.000 > 12.000.
That's why - I lift my hat with respect- for our M5touring-enthusiasts-friends -over there-.

exactly the first thing i thought!!

maybe had an exhaust repair?

other than that, it looks ok to me. i'd re-do front to rear fluid (brake & fuel) feed lines, as they always get corroded esp with winter/wet driving.

diff is nice and dry at least. But damn thats a lot of brake dust on those front rims!!!

I wish mine looked like that on the underside!!

Only the driveshafts seem a bit rusty but hey, there's no reason to assume they ever have been replaced.

+1 for Alan on the brakelines + SLS lines. Thats a periodical technical test failure overhere, MoT failure in UK

I would replace the straps holding the tank. I had one failing last year. Cheap part, hard to take off as there is very little space ( took quite some stuff off IIRC) and the bolt holding it on the side of the rear apron was rusted so bad it snapped.

Wout

Some greedy capitalist is making a lot of money out of your federalization process - charging $6-10k for less than a day's work, and holding it for up to 6 months.

What do they say they actually do for that $6k and 6 months!

Some people don't know the meaning of the word gullible

That greedy Capitalist would be the Federal Authorities ......they all tend to make quite a lot of money in most countries that they govern !

Question is .....what choice have you got ?
